11r: Petuchowski, Rabbinics ProfesSOr, Rabbi Feldman's
6-Day War Diary
to Tell 'How Rabbis Read Scripture'

Dr. Jakob J. Petuchowski, pro-
fessor of rabbinics and Jewish
theology on the Cincinnati campus
of the Hebrew Union College-Jew-
ish Institute of Religion, will be

sponsored by Temple Israel's adult
education committee, 8:30 p.m.

Rabbis Read Scripture," refresh.
ments will be served.

gree in psychology from the Uni-
t versify of Lon-
don and was or-
dained at Hebrew
Union College,

HUC-JIR, Dr. Petuchowski held

Kfar Chabad Unit
Named'BetShazar'

So many books have been written
about the Six-Day War that some
no doubt will be lost in the shuffle.
An addition to that collection by an
Atlanta rabbi does, however, draw
serious attention because of its em-
phasis on traditional values and the
devotion and dedication of people
embattled who strove for life and
at the same time clung to the basic
values of faith.
Rabbi Emanuel Feldman, in
"The 28th of Iyar," published by
Bloch, provides a day-by-day ac-
count of experiences in Israel,
starting with the 8th day of lyar,
May 18, 1967, concluding with the
first of Sivan, Friday, June 9, 1967.
These are experiences so im-
ressive, marked by incidents that
relate the attitudes of citizens
who faced extinction but were
determined to retain life, ex-
pressing the moods of the people
of Israel.
It was, of course, a period filled
with tensions. It was an era of
fears and anxieties, but of a de-
termined will, and an indestructi-
ble faith.
Every aspect of the period dur-
ing which the original threat to
Israel was in evidence, followed by
the war and the triumph, are in
this day-to-day account.
Especially noteworthy are the
descriptions in this diary of the
reactions of the Hasidim, of their
prayers, their energizing passions.
The enthusiasm that was gen-
erated by the song "Jerusalem the
Golden" is described in the recol-
lections so well delineated by Rabbi
Feldman.
