Candles From Jerusalem

By a Special Correspondent
With the countdown of shopping
days till Hanuka progressing, the
candlemakers in the old city of
Jerusalem are shifting into high
gear. They cut more wicks, they
brew more wax, they dip, pour,
polish and decorate at a feverish
pace. The result of their labor
adds still more hues to the riot of
color in Jerusalem's bazaars.
The largest candle workshop in
the old city, the Coptic "Khan" off
Christian Street, claims 400 years
in the trade. From the vaulted ceil-
ing hangs a large hoop with 74
hooks, each of which has a wick
attached to it. Below the hoop
rtands a large cauldron full of
liquid wax, which is repeatedly
over the wicks. It takes four hours
to produce a hoop-load, including
the drying periods between pour-
"bags. Along the sides of the room
are slim vats for dipping, the other
process used to make candles.
The wicks are looped to rods which
are dipped in vats.
George Boulos, the chief can-
dlemaker, explains the secrets of
his trade in fluent Hebrew as he
casually snatches a bundle of
warm tapers off the hoop, trims
the edges with an iron scalpel,
and applies „sa carved mold to
decorate them. He learned his
Hebrew as a boy, when he lived
in a predominantly Jewish quar-
ter and grew up with the neigh-
borhood gang.

Boulos' ecumenical background
is reflected in his products. His
candles show scenes from the Gos-
pels, a picture of the Dome of the
Rock, two clasped hands and the
Crescent — the latter popular for
village weddings. There is also a
mould with the Star of David, the
emblem of the state of Israel, and
Jewish and Arab villages.

The parafin for the candles comes
from Haifa refineries, while the
wax is bought from beekeepers in
Jewish and Arab villages.
Among the glittering souvenir
shops of Jerusalem's bazaar, the
showcases of Elias Manneh catch
the shoppers' eyes by the very
simplicity of their display — row
upon row of heavy candles in
jewelled colors.
Manneh, a mere fourth genera-
tion candlemaker (the workshop is
just under a century old), is obvi-
ously infatuated with the possibili-
ties of his craft.
Manneh has a special way with
colors, achieving sophisticated and
gem-like hues usually found only in
fine silks. Also on display are some
gay multicolored oblong shapes,
looking a bit abstract and experi-
mental. These are produced by 10-
year-old Michael Manneh, who
shows promising signs of becoming
an expert fifth generation candle-
maker.
