Samuel H. Himelstein, former
Gland Rapids city attorney and
active in civil rights causes, died
Dee. 9 at age 70.
Mr. Himelstein, 311 Garfield
NW, had long been active in the
American Civil Liberties Union
and the Anti-Defamation League.
As city attorney in the 1950s, he
wrote the ordinance which estab-
lished the city's human Relations
Commission, serving for several
years until 1960. He also helped
establish the former Michigan
Fair Employment Practices Com-
mission.
In 1966, Mr. Himelstein was
named the first annual winner of
the Civil Liberties Award given
by the Western Michigan Chapter
of the ACLU.
Born in Russia, Mr. Himelstein
resided in Grand Rapids for 62
years. He was a member of Cong.
Ahavas Israel, Variety Club, Kent
County Bar Association and Bnai
Brith.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs.
Anna Himelstein; and a brother,
Harry C.

Yetta Shapiro Chapter, City of
Hope, will hold its annual bowling
party 9 p.m. Tuesday at Town and

Dr. Carl F. List, the first neuro-
surgeon in Western Michigan and
a nationally known pioneer in his
field, died Dec. 12 at age 66.
Dr. List, 679 Manhattan SE, be-
gan his practice in Grand Rapids
22 years ago. He was a native of
Salbke, Germany, and was a
graduate of the University of
Berlin. Boston neurosurgeon Prof.
Harvey Cushing was his instructor
in this country.
He came to Ann Arbor in 1934
and was instructor, then associate
professor, of neurosurgery at the
University of Michigan. Until he
moved to Grand Rapids, all neuro-
surgery patients had to be taken
to Ann Arbor.
Interested in world problems
and the arts, Dr. List was a spon-
sor of Sinfonia, the new chamber
orchestra in Grand Rapids. He
authored more than 40 articles
dealing with his specialty, and
was on the staffs of Blodgett
Memorial, St. Mary's, Butter-
worth, Ferguson-Droste-Ferguson
and Kent Oaks Hospitals and a
consultant and lecturer at Veter-
ans Hospital at Ft. Custer.
Dr. List was a member of the
American Association of Neuro-
logical Surgeons, American Col-
lege of Surgeons, American Neuro-
logical Association, Congress of
Neurological Surgeons, the Kent
County and Michigan State Medic-
