Hussein's Reported Readiness to Give Up
West Bank Kept Out of Jordan Papers

(Direct 714 Teletype lairs
to The Jewish News)

JERUSALEM — Jordanian au-
thorities have impounded all news-
papers carrying or commenting on
a London Observer interview Sun-
day which quoted King Hussein as
saying he was prepared to re-
nounce his claim to the West Bank
and would welcome the establish-
ment of a Palestinian state there.
Amman Radio has remained
silent on the interview, which was
reported all over the world. Jor-
danian authorities have denied the
statements attributed to King Hus-
sein.
But Gavin Young, the corres-
pondent who interviewed the
Hashemite ruler in the Royal
Palace in Amman last week, stuck
by his story.Young arrived here
Monday and said his version was
correct.
The report that King Hussein

offered to give up the West Bank
if that would bring peace and if
"the people want it" aroused
speculation throughout the world.
Some observers saw it as a
"trial balloon" to test the reac-
tion of all the parties to the Mid-
dle East dispute. Others thought
it might be a ploy by King Hus-
sein to get West Bankers to beg
him not to abandon them.
Israeli sources said the alleged
offer by the king was "interesting"
but that it would have to be pres-
ented in a more direct and sub-
stantive manner before it could be
taken seriously.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Levi
Eshkol told the Knesset that urban
Jewish settlements would be estab-
lished in areas "which we consider
to be Israel" but said that Israel
does not believe in "grabbing land"
for settlement in the occupied Arab
territories.
He said, however, that the estab-
lishment of Nahal—paramilitary
youth settlements—in uninhabited
portions of the occupied areas was
a security consideration. He said
he would like to see 100,000 more
Jews settle in Jerusalem but that
he "shuddered" at some state-
ments by public officials regarding
settlement of occupied territories.

Beisan and Jordan Valleys which
are the prime target of artillery
and rocket attacks from Jordanian
soil, have petitioned the Knesset
to authorize Israeli occupation of a
zone east of the Jordan River de-
marcation line in order to put them
out of range of enemy fire.
Representatives of the settlers
appeared before the Knesset For-
eign Affairs and Security Commit-
tee to argue for the creation of a
demilitarized "buffer zone" reach-
ing into the Gilead Mountains which
lie within Jordanian territory.
They said such a move would
relieve the Beisan and Jordan Val-
ley settlements from constant har-
rassment by long-range artillery
employed by Jordanian and Iraqi
forces and by the Czech-made 130-
mm Katyusha rocket launchers, a
favorite weapon of the El Fatah
terrorists.
They were heard by the full com-
mittee under the chairmanship of
David Hacohen. The committee
hearing was attended by Gen.
David Elazar, commander of the
northern front.
Ten shells were fired from Jor-
danian soil last night at Neot
Hakikar, a settlement at the
southern end of the Dead Sea, a
military spokesman reported.
He said the fire was returned
and that an investigation was
under way to determine whether
the shells came from mortars or
from Katyusha rocket launchers.
No casualties or damage were
reported.
(Iraq may send squadrons of
Soviet-built MIG-17 and MIG-21
jets to Jordan to bolster that na-
tion's defenses against Israeli air
attacks, according to reports from
Amman to London. The report also
said that Iraq may send additional
troops to Jordan, although their
number would be limited owing to
Baghdad's continuing war against
the Kurds in northern Iraq. The
report placed the number of Iraqi
troops presently in Jordan at 17,-
000. Other sources have estimated
that 10-12,000 Iraqi troops have
been stationed in Jordan since the
June 1967 war.)

Heart Transplant
Listed as Critical

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)
TEL AVIV—Itzhak Sullam,

Is-
rael's first heart transplant patient,
was put on the critical list at
Beilinson Hospital Wednesday. He
was suffering from pneumonia and
had not responded to the applica-
tion of an artificial kidney that was
used when his natural organ failed.
A hospital bulletin said doctors
were maintaining a 24-hour watch
but that chances for his survival
were lessening.
Dr. Maurice Levi, the surgeon
who performed the heart trans-
plant operation on Sullam nearly
two weeks ago, said in a televi-
sion interview Tuesday that he
was prepared to repeat the surgery
as soon as he finds another patient
and another donor. He said that
Sullam, a 41-year-old elevator op-
erator who came to Israel from
Tunis 20 years ago, was fully
aware of his critical condition prior
to the operation and agreed to it
because it was his only chance
for survival. Dr. Levi made no
mention of the patient who donated
Sullam's new heart. -
The donor's identity has been
kept secret, for reasons unknown,
and the secret has stirred contro-
versy here. Several families have
claimed that a relative's heart
had been extracted without their
knowledge or consent.

Our actions are not altogether
our own; they depend less upon us
than upon chance. They are given
to us from every hand; we do not
always deserve them.
