Levine's 'The Lion in Winter' Scores Triumphs BY HERBERT G. Lurr (copyright 1968, JTA, Inc-) , HOLLYWOOD—Joe Levine did it again! After the outstanding suc- cess of "The Gradaute," with an Oscar for his director and five Golden Globe Awards to his credit, and some $80,000,000 from domes- tic box office receipts alone, he comes up with a new sensational winner, "The Lion in Winter" — promising to garner Academy ac- colades for the two stars Kath- arine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole, and for director Anthony Harvey and playwright-screen writer James Goldman. Termed by some a 12th Century "Virginia Woolf" dramatization, "The Lion in Win- ter" on the surface deals with the struggle for supremacy between Henry H and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their three sons Richard, Goeffrey and John, a quintet of greedy and power- hungry hyenas constantly at each other's throat; yet as Miss Hep- burn summarizes on the screen, "just an ordinary family, with its ups and downs." Levine had a hunch that an un- conventional story dealing with the youth of today, such as "The Graduate," was something audi- ences wanted to see everywhere. Long lines at box offices from New York to Los Angeles, show that the filmmaker's judgment was right. With "The Lion in Win- ter," he vigorously delves into a love-hate conflict laid in the Moyen Age but developed with the deep psychological knowledge of today and in reality, a historical image of our time. The production program of Le- vine Avco-Embassy surpasses the keenest estimates. Currently in re- lease is "The Producers," the Mel Brooks farce starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder.
