The late Mr. Brown was one of
Detroit's colorful personalities.

plans and in a period of national
economic depression he succeeded,
with other Shaarey Zedek leaders,
in securing builders' and bankers'
confidence in the good faith of the
congregation whose then enormous
debts were paid in full in the
shortest time, confirming the
splendid relationships that existed
between the synagogue and the
building industry. Mr. Brown
served as a trustee of the congre-
gation.
A native Detroiter, Mr. Brown
worked closely for a number of
years with his late brother, the
world famed David A. Brown who,
with the Warburgs, the Marshalls,
Jacob Billikopf and others, suc-
ceeded in raising $14,000,000 for the
Joint Distribution Committee—the
largest fund ever to be raised, up
to that time—for a philanthropic
venture.
The two Browns worked for JDC
and other major Jewish as well as
civic causes.
An avid and well-known sports
fisherman, Mr. Brown fished for
salmon north of the Arctic two
years ago. He was a World War I
