great significance and his gifts to
Jewry have been immense.
It is in tribute to these achieve-
ments that "Philip W. Lown: A
Jubilee Volume," edited by Judah
Pilch, has just been issued by
Bloch Publishing Co.
This volume is a combination of
tributes to Lown and reviews of
his gifts to Jewry and to America,
as well as a compilation, in the
form of numerous literary contri-
butions, of the thinking of noted
scholars on matters involving
Jewish cultural needs and aspira-
tions.
There are two portions to this
book — entitled "The Man and
His Work" and "Essays and
Studies." The first commences
with a biographical sketch of
Lown by Prof. Isaac I. Janow-

Jacob Krantz, the great maggid
(evangelist) of Dubno (died 1804),
was tamed for his parables. Ar-
riving in a certain town one day,
he stopped at the house of a rich
man.
"Peace to you!" the host greeted
him. "Sit down and tell me a good
parable."
"With pleasure," replied the
preacher. "A poor man once
brought home a goat which he had
purchased at a fair, and his wife
immediately began to try to milk
it. Of course, she could not get
out a drop. 'Pooh!' she said. 'This
animal cannot be a goat. There is
no milk in her.' To which her hus-
band replied: 'You are wrong, my
beloved. It is a goat, and there is
milk in her. But she has come a
long distance, and is tired and hun-
gry and thirsty. Supply her needs,
and let her rest overnight, and
you will see—tomorrow she will
give plenty of milk.' "

When I take up the end of a web,
and find it packthread, I do not
expect, by looking further, to find
embroidery. —Samuel Johnson.
