46—Friday, December 13, 1968 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Hanuka Quiz Servan-Schreiber Challenges U.S. An eminent French journalist takes note of the European eco- nomic crisis and the American impact in a serious evaluation of the existing conflicts. In "The American Challenge," published by Atheneum (122 E. 42nd, NY17) translated from the French by Ronals Steel, J.-J. Servan-Screib- er presents an examination of American investment in Europe. He touches upon the Vietnam is- sue, indicates that while American forces will leave Vietnam, "Ameri- can industry will not leave Europe, emphasizes thereby the existence of "a challenge by the Americans" and concludes as a European that "we ought to find in ourselves the power and the desire to build a more intelligent and bountiful post-industrial society." In the course of his analyses he concludes: "The advanced indus- trial societies that have the po tential to become post-industrial include: Western Europe, the So- viet Union, Israel, East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Australia and New Zealand." In a preface to this volume, Arthur Schlesinger Jr. asserts: "If Europe really wishes to es- cape American domination, there is only the way of federation and social justice. All this, in M. Servan-Schreiber's view, implies Britain as a part of Europe, for British scientific and technologi- cal skill are necessary if Europe is to have any weight in the world of electronic computers, automated information systems, space technology and atomic energy." Servan-Schreiber states in his conclusion that the American chal- lenge "is imposed upon us" and that, as Europeans, "we can no longer sit back and wait for the renaissance," that "it can come only from subtle analysis, rigor- ous thought and precise reason- ing."
