Dr. Wexler Condemns UN's Honoring Soviet Anti-Semite
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — Bnai
Brith has charged that a Ukranian
representative of the United Na-
tions, named last week as one of
the recipients of the UN's human
rights award, had been "an un-
blushing apologist" for a much-
publicized anti-Semitic book pub-
lished with state approval in the
Soviet Union.
Dr. William A. Wexler, Bnai
Brith president, deplored the
United Nations' selection of Prof.
Peter Nedbailo among this year's
award winners, citing the Ukrain-
ian delegate's defense of "Judaism
Without Embellishment," a bitterly
anti-Jewish diatribe written by
Trofim Kichko, another Ukrainian,
and published in 1964 under the
auspices of the Ukrainian Academy
of Sciences.
Dr. Wexler noted that on March
15, 1964, Prof. Nedbailo defended
the book and its cartoons at a
session of the UN Commission on
Human Rights.
Three weeks later, the Soviet
Communist Party ideological
commission itself criticized the
book as "likely to offend" for
its anti-Semitism, and the book
was then withdrawn by Soviet
authorities. Dr. Wexler said "It
is particularly anomalous that
Nedbailo's name is included on
a list with such eminent world
citizens as the late Mrs. Eleanor
Roosevelt and Prof. Rene Cas-
sin."
jury which had made the selec-
tions.
The selection of Nedbailo was
criticized editorially Wednesday in
the Washington Post.
The editorial said:
"Pyotr Nedbailo is a Soviet
Ukrainian lawyer whose work on
criminal procedures in his own
country may well give him stand-
ing in the field of human rights
—there.
"As the Ukraine's representa-
tive to the United Nations Human
Rights Commission, however, he
found himself at one point energeti-
cally apologizing for a Soviet anti-
Semitic tract. Now he is the Soviet-
Eastern European region's nomi-
nee for a United Nations award
for outstanding achievement in
human rights. The choices of other
regions include the late Chief
Justice Albert Luthuli of South
Africa, Eleanor Roosevelt and this
year's Nobel Peace Prize laureate,
Rene Cassin of France. They com-
prise a worthy company, and ft
is embarrassing and scandalous
that United Nations log rolling
has made Nedbailo a part
of it."
