Fraenkel, a former member of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency staff (and correspondent for The Jewish News), was praised for his contributions to Jewish life in Eng- land. David Kessler, chairman of the Jewish Chronicle, pointed out that there is hardly a Jewish news- paper anywhere to which Fraenkel has not contributed. He also is the author of a guide to the Jewish press of the world. His contributions to the preser- vation of Yiddish also were cited. Fraenkel's father was a mayor in Istrik, Galicia, between 1898 and 1924, spanning Austrian and Polish rule.
