The Jewish Community Council, commenting on inquiries received with the advent of the Christmas season regarding religious pro- grams in the public schools, stat- ed that in consultation with na- tional Jewish agencies and based on local experiences as well as the experiences of Jewish communi- ties throughout the country, a gen- erally accepted set of guidelines has been adopted for the guidance and reference of interested par- ents and teachers. The statement declares: "Basically, the Jewish Com- munity Council adheres to the conviction that religious obser- vances do not belong in the public school. This position has been sup- ported by recent United States Supreme Court rulings which see such practices as a violation of the principle of separation of church and state. "The traditional position of Jew- ish communities has been that the home and synagogue are respon- sible for the maintenance and furtherance of religion, and that religious observances outside of -a religious setting can only become diluted and meaningless. While public schools have a responsibil- ity to teach pupils that religious diversities exist and that accept- ance of and respect for such dif- ferences are basic to American democracy, this implies no need on the part of public schools to teach religious doctrines or to en- gage in religious practices.
