Survey to Determine Need for Ulpan Courses in U.S.

NEW YORK (JTA)—A Hebrew
University expert on teacher train-
ing is conducting a survey of
ulpan programs—intensive Hebrew
language courses — in the United
States with the intention of estab-
lishing such courses in communi-
ties where they do not exist.
The survey by Aharon Rosen
was undertaken on behalf of the
Jewish Agency American Section

according to Dr. A. P. Gannes,
director of its department of edu-
cation and culture.
Dr. Gannes said that Rosen will
also conduct an eight-week teach-
er training course, beginning next
month, to prepare teachers to con-
duct ulpan schools. The Ulpan
Center in New York, a joint pro-
ject of the Jewish Agency and the
Herzl Institute, has an enrollment
of 650 students, Dr. Gannes said.

Sometimes
On Sunday

Sometimes on Sunday you'd like to do a

little shopping. For the next two weeks, our

new men's store in the Tel-I2 Mall will be,

open on Sundays. But just some times: noon

to 6 p.m.

These photographs show areas
that were struck by Israeli jets in
retaliation for more than 50 at-
tacks on Israeli settlements since
Nov. 23. Upper photo shows build-
ing in Kfar Assad, Jordan. Middle
photo shows remains of bridge
that was destroyed by Israeli
jets 40 miles east of the southern

tip of the Dead Sea. In photo on
left a Jordanian official points to

wreckage of an Israeli-jet alleged-
ly shot down during the raid.
Israel reported loss of only one
jet.

Novosti Cites Drama Group's Success

A USSR Novosti Press Agency
release submitted to The Jewish
News by the Soviety Embassy in
Washington states that the Jewish
Drama Company headed by Venia-
mln Schwarzer has just returned
to Moscow from its two-month
tours over 15 cities, including Kis-
hiamt, Chernovitsi, Simf e r o p o 1,
Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, Kiro-
vograd, Krivoi Rog, Donetsk, Gor-
lovka, and Yalta, where it gave 50
performances. The release quotes
Schwarzer as stating:
"Our program included 'Tevye
the Milkman,' and 'Two Hundred
Thousand' by Sholom Aleichem
and 'The Spaniards' by Lermon-
toy. The performance we ran most
WAS our new production of 'The

Witch' by Avraam Goldfaden. I
must say that since its successful
opening night in Moscow several
months ago, our artists have
achieved still better results."
With an apparent sense of pride
in this achievement and a desire
to indidate that Jewish cultural
groups are functioning in Russia,
the news release, written by Sem-
yon Rabinovich, also quotes from
favorable press reviews of the
drama company's performances in
newspapers in the cities where the
drama group made its appear-
ances.
