THE EXTRAVAGANT JOINT
dinner-dance by Knights of Py-
thias, Detroit No. 55, and Pythian
Sisters, Temple No. 152, set for
Feb. 9, in the lavish 8,000 sq. ft.
Essex-Hampton Room of Raleigh
House, will be in celebration of the
new officers for 1969 . . . All stops
are being pulled out for a very
gala affair ... The combination of
Raleigh House Catering, Hal Gor-
don's Orchestra, Sammy Woolf's
great song styling and surprise
guest stars, will make for a fabu-
lously wonderful evening . . . Now
that the price has been settled at
$25 a couple, reservations will be
taken from the general public.
JIMMY "GROUCHO" RACH-
LEFF is Detroit's own replica of
the famous movie and TV person-
ality and has appeared many times
at public affairs with the famous
Groucho eye ogle . . . The funny
patter of the Marx Brothers of
years gone by is still remembered
by many, with the funniest lines
usually going to Grouch() (in real
life his name is Julius).
Jimmy is chock full of the fa-
mous stories . . . and tells one of
Groucho's funniest routines which
concerned his African hunting trip
and began with "Did I ever tell
you how I shot a wild elephant in
my pajamas? How he got into my
pajamas I'll never know. Getting
his tusks off was quite a problem.
In Alabama the Tuscaloosa." . . .
He came home in a rickshaw. The
meter registered $11.40. "Con-
found it," he roared to the driver.
"Didn't I tell you not to go through
India?"
Then there was the skit where
Groucho and Chico served as op-
posing lawyers . . . Chico became
tongue-tied when it was his turn
to question the witness . . . The
judge thundered, "Well, ask your
witness some questions." . . "All-
a-right," said Chico. "What's a
big-a-da animal wid four legs an'
a trunk in da front?" . . . "That's
irrelevant," screamed Groucho
"Dat's a right," agreed Chico . . .
Groucho crossed the stage, planted
his portfolio on the judge's bench,
and declared, "I rest my case."
THE MARX BROTHERS once
became the managers of a prize
fighter . . . He was a lumbering
giant named Cohen, and richly
earned the nickname of "Canvas-
back" by an invariable custom of
getting himself knocked cold in
round one of every fight . . . The
boys had a great time with Can-
vasback Cohen until one day, ac-
cording to legend, Groucho knock-
ed him out in a gymnasium work-
out . . . That was too much . . .
Groucho claims that Canvasback
started as a lightweight, but was
hit so many times that he swelled
out into a heavy.
IN "MONKEY BUSINESS" tells
Jimmy, Grouch discovered a large
automatic pistol and near it a few
small pearl-handled revolvers .. .
"This gat," announced Groucho,
"had gittens." . . . Almost imme-
diately after that deduction, the
ship's captain moves into view
"I've got a complaint," roared
Groucho ... "What is it?" said the
captain testily . . . "Last night
when I was in bed in my cabin,
who do you think came tiptoing
along the corridor and tapped on
my door?" . . . The captain said
he didn't know .. "Nobody did,"
declared Grouch, "and that's my
complaint."

If Long Island University ap-
proves, Roy Rubin will journey to
Israel in April to help the Israeli
basketball team prepare for the
Maccabia Games, July 28 through
Aug. 6, 1969, The announcement I
was made by Sol Leiber, national
basketball chairman of the U.S.
Committee Sports for Israel. Rubin,
who will begin his eighth season
with the Blackbirds, coached his
team to the small-college cham-
pionship last year and a berth
the National Invitation Tourna-
ment.
The U.S. has won every gold
medal since entering the Macca-
bia Games basketball competition
in 1950. Basketball was introduced
into the games in 1935 (a year be-
fore it became an Olympic sport)
and. Egypt (yes, Egypt) won the
first gold medal.
Barry Liebowitz, a former star
performer with Rubin's LIU quin-
tet, is already in Israel. Liebowitz
played with three different ABA
teams last season. He was traded
to a fourth club, New Orleans, in
the off-season, Seven-footer Dave
