ROSE SHLIVER asked a painter
what he would charge to paint
hers and hubby Jack's house . . .
and the painter gave her a price
. . Rose looked at the man with
surprise and said that she wouldn't
pay Michelangelo that price . . .
"Well, I tell you one thing," de-
clared the painter. "If that guy
is taking the job for less he ain't
no member of the union!"

LITTLE ARNOLD GABE stood
looking at his recently arrived
brother Sheldon, who lay kicking
and squalling without letup, and
with a puzzled frown asked moth-
er, ex-Detroiter Anne Gabe (hubby
Sam is now a Tucson, Ariz., attor-
ney) "Did you say the baby came
from Heaven?" . . . Anne said
that he had, and Arnold replied,
"Golly! I don't blame them for
getting rid of him!"

GOOD NEWS TO hear that Sam
Geller has left Highland Park
General Hospital.

ONE JOKE STANDS out as Sam
Levensen's biggest laugh-getter on
TV . . . That's the one he told of
an irate mother who marched her
10-year-old son into a doctor's of-
fice and demanded, "Is a boy of
this age able to perform an ap-
. "Of course
pendectomy?" .
.
not," snapped the doctor .
Mama turned angrily on the boy
and shouted, "So, who was right?
Put it back!"

CHILDREN'S DEPT. . . . Six-
year-old Arthur Moss felt like cry-
ing and he was going to cry re-
gardless of how much noise he
made . . . His grandmother, Mrs.
Allan Miller tried to console him,
but it was no use . . . Finally, she
said, "Oh, come now, I wouldn't
cry like that if I were you." . . .
"You can cry like you want to,"
sobbed little Arthur. "I wanna cry
my own way."
A DEMURE MISS about town
was engaged by a manufacturer
to distribute little boxes of a new
kind of candy free to passers-by
at J.L. Hudson in Northland . . .
At the close of her first day's
work, she ran into an old friend

outside the store, who asked, "Is
it true you're . going to get mar.
ried soon?" .. . In a few months,
*as the answer • . ..That's won-
derful, said the friend. "What are
you doing in the meantime?" .
"Nothing much," admitted the
girl. "Just giving away free sam-
ples."

HERMAN GREENBERG needed
a new caretaker at his tool -and
the shop . . . and hired an appli-
cant who had only recently estab-
lished residence in Detroit after
living on a farm in Northern
Michigan . . Herman sent him
downtown on an errand . . and
when he got back, he was wear-
ing a ring with at least four car-
ats of radiance . . . Dazzled by
the brilliance of the stone, Her-
man bluntly asked if it was a real
diamond . . . "Well; if it ain't,"
answered t h e caretaker, "I've
been, stung out of eight bits."
