Israel Offers U. S. Youths Share in Life When, in the years immediately preceding the emergence of Israel, the remnants of European Jewry began pouring into Palestine, American Jewish youth were moved to go on aliya. _With -the outbreak of Israel's War of Libera- tion they became part of the spe- cial units set up for volunteers from western countries. • ' This was the first impressive evidence of a significant number of American youths shaking in the Jewish people's struggle for na- tional renaissance. Their participa- tion in the building of the land in the years that followed signified the reawakened pioneering spirit, that same spirit which inspired the European habit21in (pioneers) to go to Palestine in' the early years of our centdry. --------- Together with the uplifting feel- ing of Pioneering, adventure rand challenge emerged the deep: satis; faction of personal identification with the people and state of Israel that are- now the living - embodi- ment of Jewry's history, faith and culture. Here .they. found -a - Plaee . where their -own, Often subcon- scious, ties with the . history ., tradi- tion and-spiritual values of- their people could be translated into reality. - ' - - • * .• A profoundly moving manifes- tation of American youth's bur- geoning commitment to : Israel was their massive, spontaneous response- to the crisis that faced the country in June of 1967. Thousands volunteered to serve Israel, hundreds went before_ the travel ban was imposed; eager to help and to share. The quick end of the fighting changed- the volunteering picture. The. need now is for young people ready to commit themselves for longer periods of lime. The reaction of the American Jewish community has been to offer concrete programs as vehicles through which our boys and, girls may spend anywhere from -a s'uin- mer to a year in Israel. Recogniz- ing the identifieation 'that Ameri- can youth has ..developed' with a pioneering country- and f'under- standing Israel's meaning for them as Americans and as Jews, the American Zionist Youth. Foundation in coeperation with the -Jewish Agency has set up -programs- which enable them to shaie in - the Israel experience. There are basically two types of programs: - one, volunteer 'service in Israel and the other, work, tra- vel, study programs. The volunteer programs - are -Sherut. La'am and VIP. -Sherut La'am is the one- year service program which pro- vides' the opportunity for experi- enced professionals, graduate and undergraduate students to work with newly arrived immigrants. The Volunteers for Israel Pro- gram (VIP) is a six-month serv- ice program which places the vol- unteer -in needed areas to work in building new kibutzim, strength- ening existing settlements and clearing land. The Israel Summer Institute of the Foundation offers seven-week summer programs- of work; travel and study to young men and wom- en and to college youth. The foun- dation also provides a 10-week "Sumner in Kibutz" project through which youth over age 18 may have a full taste of kibutz living.' A unique project is the National Bar Mitzva Club through which boys and girls, who are enrolled at the age of 13, may accumulate the funds for the Israel trip over a three-year period in order to spend a summer in Israel' when they are 16. The more details of our daily life we can band over to the effoitless custody of automatism, the more our higher powers of mind will be set free for their proper work. —William James.
