Israel, Jewish Community Fete
Jacob Pines on 80th Birthday
The state of Israel, the Flint
Jewish community and Cong. Beth
Israel will honor Jacob Pines Dec.
8 for his many years of devoted
and dedicated service on the occa-
sion of his 80th birthday. The event,
on behalf of Israel Bonds, will take
place at 6:30 p.m. in Cong. Beth
Israel, under the chairmanship of
Louis Kasle.
Mr. Pines, a lifelong Zionist,
served as president of Beth Israel
for six years and has been a leader
in United Jewish Appeal and State
Fund in the Freedom Forest near
Jerusalem.
Mr. Pines' name and inscription
are also entered in the Sepher
Ha'Zahav—the golden book of the
Keren Kayemeth, preserved for all
time in Jerusalem.
In 1918, Mr. Pines joined the
Jewish Brigade of the British
Army in Palestine under General
Allenby. In the same brigade, was
David Ben-Gurion and Itzak Ben-
Zvi, the late president of Israel.
Mr. Pines' married Ida Sandler
of Detroit in 1920.

The Social Welfare Committee of
the Flint Jewish Community Coun-
cil, which met this week, is apply-
ing for a membership in the Jew-
ish -Family Service Association.
Murray Eisen, who does casework
for the Council, has a masters de-
gree in social work and is super-
visor of casework at the Whaley
Memorial Foundation.

JACOB PINES
of Israel Bond drives since their
inception. Year after year, Mr.
Pines has solicited the largest
number of contributors for the
UJA Campaign in Flint and has
personally raised many thousands
of dollars.
He was treasurer of the Flint
Jewish Community Council for
many years and now serves as
treasurer emeritus. He is also
chairman of the collections and
house committees of the Council
and has served on various other
committees. He has worked for the
Jewish National Fund and is a
member of Bnai Brith.
Mr. Pines has received many
honors from organizations, in-
cluding the Zionist Organization
of America and the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary. Five years
ago, he was honored for 25 years'
service by the national UJA. On
the occasion of his '75th birthday,
several groves of trees, known
as the Jacob Pines Groves, were
planted by the Jewish ,National
