Friday, November 15, 1968-7 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Yemeni Indicted as Plotters on Nixon's Life Teens in Poll Favor Interdating . hness but Assert Their Jewts By BEN GALLOB (Copyright 1968, JTA Inc.) More than 75 per cent of teen- age members of a Pittsburgh Jew- ish Y polled in a comprehensive study of their Jewish views felt it was all right to date non-Jews, and two-thirds reported they had had such dates. Of those parents who knew about such interdating by their children, the survey found nearly '70 per - cent disapproved strongly and 16 per cent disapproved mildly. The questionnaires were filled out by 326 teen members of the Y-Iren e Kaufman Center, repre- senting about one-third of all teen members of the Y. The data was summarized by Earl Yaillen, Y- IKC supervisor of staff develop- ment. About 12 per cent of the teen- agers identified themselves as Or- thodox, about 30 per cent Reform, 46 per cent Conservative, and the rest listed themselves as not af- filiated with any synagogue or in the "don't know" category. The majority of the young re- spondents reported that they at- tended religious services less than once a month and that most of their parents did not attend regu- larly. About 65 per cent of the teen- agers listed High Holy Day at- tendance as one of the practices they considered essential to being "a good Jew." In a list of such practices, the largest vote of approval — 84 per cent — was given to the proposition that one must accept _ being a Jew and not try to hide it. Almost 72 per cent voted for the proposal that one must be- T. Leading a moral and ethical life was cited by 62 per cent. Orthodox teen-age support for these proposals was substantially above the averages for all of the teen-agers, and Reform endorse- ment was below the averages. Slightly more than half agreed that to be a good Jew, one should gain respect of one's Christian neighbors, and about the same number 'listed membership in a synagogue as essential. But marry- ing within the faith was listed by only 40 per cent. Three-fourths of the Orthodox teenagers regarded marriage with- in the faith as essential, compared with slightly more than half of the Conservative youth and about 15 per cent of the Reform youngsters. Proposals which received the least support from the teen-agers as being essential to being a good Jew included working for equality for all minority groups (24 per cent); promoting general civic im- provement, and support of all hu- manitarian causes (about 20 per cent each); observing the Jewish dietary laws (10 per cent); and contributing to Jewish philanthro- pies (about 9 per cent). A conflict emerged from find- ings on attitudes toward Israel. Less than 15 per cent listed support of Israel as essential to being a good Jew. When asked to indicate what areas of Jew- ish knowledge they would like to learn more about, they listed Israel and Zionism last. But specifics indicated very dif- ferent attitudes. Nearly 85 per cent agreed that American Jews should help to raise funds for Is- rael, two-thirds agreed that Amer- ican Jews should try to influence the United States government to help Israel, and nearly half agreed that all American Jews should visit Israel at least once. Less than 2 per cent, however, agreed that American Jews should plan to settle in Israel. 0.1": The three Yemenis indicted in a plot to kill President-elect Nixon are shown ha custody in New Vitt. They are 43-year-old Ahmad Namer (right, with policeman) and two sons, Abdo, 19, and (middle) Has- sein, - 20. They're held on $25,000 bond each. LONDON (JTA)—Egyptian news- papers claimed Monday that the arrest of three Yemeni Arabs in New York Saturday night for al- legedly plotting to assassinate President-elect Richard M. Nixon was part of a "Zionist" plot to dis- credit the Arabs and turn Nixon against them. Cairo's semi-official newspaper Al Abram alleged that the police account was -"full of holes." The newspaper Al Gumhoriya said the charges against Ahmed Rageh Namer, and his sons, Abdo and Hussein, were brought by the po- lice of New York which is "a den of Zionism in America." Al Abram said the alleged plot against Nixon may have been de- vised to hint to the next President that "perhaps New York's 5,000,000 Jews denied you their votes but the Arabs tried to murder you." Al Ahram said that Yemen was not directly involved in the Pales- tine issue and that a plot against Nixon was unlikely because he has not taken office and his exact Middle East policy was not as yet known despite its generally pro- Israel slant. The three men were indicted on four counts by a Brooklyn grand jury Wednesday after two days of testimony, chiefly by an informant who told police he was asked to be the trigger man in the assassina- tion. The trio was charged with con- spiracy, criminal solicitation and two counts of possession of dan- gerous weapons. They pleaded in- •nocent. Their defense attorney is Joseph Levine. 1\ Chicago . . .site of this year's turbulent and controversial Demo- cratic national convention . . . has hosted more major party nominat- ing conventions since 1856 than any Cut zen;Dr ..ve other city.
