Elizabeth Bowen's Novel 'Eva Trout'

"Eva Trout or Changing Scenes"
by Elizabeth Bowen is a master-
ful novel, replete with drama,
marked by deep study of a single
individual and her trying experi-
ences fitting into a pattern of hu-
man conflicts.
- "Eva _Trout," published by
Knopf, represents studies of multi-
ple emotions, involving antago-
nisms in friendships, a broken
home, the independence of a dau-
ghter who is left by a mother who
fled from her f a mily several
months after Eva was born, and a
father whose interests add to ten-
sions and divisiveness.
The new Bowen novel — this is
her 16th work — is a drama that
ends in tragedy. Just as Eva had
attained love the experience of the
woman so interestingly delinated
in a masterful narrative meet trag-
ic death.
Motherless Eva lived under try-
ing conditions. Waiting for her
26th birthday to get her inheri-
tance, she was both militant and a
seeker of relief from her tensions,
escaping frequently, living inter-
mittently in her English environ-
ment, in Paris, the U. S. Middle
West, with London the final out-

come of the dramatic role of a
woman who could not accept the
sad state into which she was
placed.
This is perhaps one of Elizabeth
Bowen's most noteworthy novels.

British Board of Deputies
Concerned by Humane Society's
Anti-Shehita Campaign
LONDON (JTA) —The Board of
Deputies of British Jews announced
it "is giving urgent and serious
consideration" to a campaign
launched by a humane society
against shehita—the Jewish ritual
slaughtering of cattle and poultry.
A statement by Michael Fidler,
board of deputies president, said
the campaign sought "to deprive
the Jewish community of its right
to continue recognized humane and
painless methods of animal slaugh-
ter."
The campaign against shehita is
being conducted by the "Council
of Justice to Animals and Humane
Slaughtering Association." T h e
group has been described as one of
many "animal lovers" organiza-
tions which "are constantly cam-
paigning against stag hunting,
vivisection and shehita."
