Bernardis -.Organize
Sculptures Company

NEW YORK (JTA) — Herschel
Bernardi, Broadway star of "Fid-
dler on the Roof," has joined with
two brothers to form a company
to prepare and distribute sculp-
tures of life in the European shtetl.
Sam Bernardi and Jack Bernardi
are both sculptors and both acted
with Herschel in Yiddish theater
plays and musicals many years
ago.
The current sculpture repertoire
of the Brothers Bernardi includes
Tevya the Milkman; Mendel, the
dancing Hasid; the heder; Mottel;
the immigrant and other familiar
characters of a now-vanished Euro-
pean scene.

EVER HEAR OF A gift basket
with a fruit punch bowl in the
middle? . . . That's what one cus-
tomer wanted and that's what he
got from Bottle & Basket . . . And
the fellow insisted that it be de-
livered with the punch in the mid-
dle ready for immediate serving!
. . . price was no object . . . Milt
Goldberg solved the problem by
having the punch put in the bowl
about a block away from the re-
cipient's address . . . It caused a
mild sensation to say the least! .. .
Sandwich trays are also a big thing
at Alban's Bottle & Basket . : . and
are kept hot or cold as the case
may be, in trucks designed just
for this purpose.
ONE OF THE FEW places in
town with an absolutely complete
luncheon menu is The Apartment
on W. McNichols, 21/2 blks. south of
Southfield . . . Could be because
this fine spot doesn't serve dinners
—only lunches—and excitingly de-
licious too . . . Specialty is the
juicy, tantalizingly tasteful 7 oz.
sirloin steak, $1.75 complete . .
The long list of yum yum delights
is served until 4:30 p.m. when the
kitchen is closed . . . The Apart-
ment is, of course, open until 2
a.m. . . . New owners of just six
weeks, Jack Freed and Ray Bres-
ler, seat about 120 in the intimate
lounge that gives you the feeling
of leisure and comfort . . . Easy
chairs, sofas and cocktail tables
give attendees at The Apartment
Lounge an atmosphere of enchant-
ing comfort in graceful leisure ..
It's wonderful to sit on a sofa or
lounge chair at The Apartment and
listen to the very fine Bobby Laurel
Trio .. . They're really good!
JACK PAGOTO • IS creating a
sensation at Vannelli's Restaurant
on Woodward ... The new owner,
going in big for seafood, has gotten
his huge tank that holds 100 live
lobsters . . . People make their
selection and ask Jack to reach in
and take the crawler out.
DICK LICHTMAN, recently of
Katz' Delicatessen on Nine Mile
Rd. in Oak Park, is owner of the
new Northgate Delicatessen, just
north of 10 Mile Rd. . . . Dick is a
very likeable fellow with a lot of
delly know-how in his 14 years
behind the corned beef counter
. . . starting with Lou Loewy's,
then Boesky's on 12th and James
C,ouzens, Village Delicatessen on
Maple Rd., Sol's, etc . . Now he
is bossman of his own place.
THE TRENIERS, eight comedy-
bent singers and musicians whose
antics delighted audiences when
The Moon first opened its doors
late last November, began a three-
week engagement last Monday at
this very popular suburban supper
club . . . Also returned 'to, the
Moon is vocalist Terry O'Mara, a
vivacious blonde performer whose
artful renditions captivated . diners
when she first appeared in - one of
the club's "Salute to Broadway"
musical revues which are no longer
at The Moon in accordance with
its new policy . . . Terry sings in
the Velvet Cavern.

appliances . . . Just fold them and
push into the rolls . . . Mark each
roll . . . Store them neatly.

1HE AUTHENTIC ITALIAN dish
called Involtini, sometimes known
as veal roll-ups, can be gotten at
Alvaro's on 14 Mile Rd. nr. Crooks
Rd. . . . Few places serve this de-
licious dish properly . . . Also
mighty tasty at Alvaro's is the
Scaloppine a la Marengo, made up
of cubes of veal, green olives,
onion, tomatoes, garlic and Italian
wine.

IT IS ILLEGAL in the state, of
Michigan to use the word "kosher"
on any product unless it is abso-
lutely so . • . Yet many restaurants
still offer "kosher" sandwiches in
obvious ignorance that they are
breaking the law . . . It is permis-
sible to use "Jewish-Style" . . .
The expression, "Kosher-Style" is
also illegal . . . there is no such
thing!

Diabetes can occur in both sexes
and people of all ages. Cases have
been diagnosed in a nine-day old
baby and a 99-year old woman.
However, it occurs most commonly
in those over 45 years of age.
