Rabbi Says Law OKs Transplant to TORONTO (JTA)—An Orthodox rabbi said here that Jewish law permits Jews to donate their hearts or other organs for trans- plant but forbids them to give their bodies to science or for ana- tomical dismemberment "because most schools do not give the body enough respect." Rabbi N. L. Rabinovitch'- of Clanton Park Synagogue, who lec- tures in mathematics at the Uni- versity of Toronto, said at a uni- versity seminar that donating a heart was a life-saving procedure that took precedence over the commandment that forbids muti- lation of the dead. He said there was nothing in the Tora that forbade the use of kid- neys, corneas or any-vital organs taken from a Jewish donor "be- cause there is no greater merit even in death than contributing to saving a life." He said the Tora also permits autopsies if they are needed to find the answers to medical puz- zles, but the Tora would not allow persons to give a nose for cosmetic reasons because that would not justify mutilating the dead. Rabbi Rabinovitch said it would be acceptable for a Jewish person to be given a pig's heart if science! developed a way to use animal organs instead of human organs in a transplant. The an- nouncement was made by Dr. Louis Finkelstein, chancellor of the Seminary, in New York. The third overseer elected with Karbal and Kasle is Dr. Lowell E. Bellin, executive medical director of New York City's Medicaid pro- gram. They will each serve for three-year terms on the Semi- nary's board. Karbal is the ninth from the De- troit area to be appointed to the lay body which helps to formulate policy for the Seminary.
