Everything under the sun! So here is
my fall collection of topical trivia.

THE TALMUD & THE TEACHERS
"11 a city deteriorates, it is because
the teachers are inadequately recom-
pensed." So declared second-century
sage Simeon ben 1 °hal. For the rabbis
insisted that reasonable salaries, as
well as respect, be paid to educators.
"The world exists only for the sake
of the school children," maintained
Judah the Prince, editor of the Mishnah.
"And the studies of school children
may not he interrupted even for the
building of the Temple." Renowned
Roman historian Tacitus commented
contemptuously on the contemporary
Jewish scene: –They count it a crime
to kill any of their children. They think
much of having children and nothing of
facing death." No wonder the Roman
Empire declined and fell ...

THE COMMON DISEASE

He who suffers from this disease tries
to belittle that which he does not
understand."

YIDDISH IS ALIVE AND WELL...
In 'sew York City at any rate. Uptown,
downtown, on Broadway and on Second
Avenue. even on Central Park South,
Yiddish theater plays these days to
packed enthusiastic and empathetic
houses. And why not? Earthy, intimate,

cozy, caustic, cosmopolitan, and only
