Empress Dedicates JDC Hospital
Empress Farah Diba of Iran greets a young patient during a tour
of the K.K.K. Hospital in Tehran after the dedication of a new surgi-
cal wing. The hospital is part of an extensive health and welfare
program helping over 20,000 of the country's 75,000 Jews, supported
by the Joint Distribution Committee with United Jewish Appeal funds.

the basis for this postulate, one
must understand that the Jewish
people do not allow animal sacri-

cause of the lack of complete moral
purity, understanding and dedica-

high degree of dedication both on
the part of the individual and so-

of being able to offer an animal

lives of animals for food today—
but we fall short of being able to
consider this an act of sacrifice

Brock Brower's Personality Parade
Brock Brower, who now lectures
at Princeton University, has an en-
viable record as an analytical
writer and student of personality
fame. His numerous essays have
helped us understand men in lead-
ership whose characteristics he
has viewed with keen perception.
In "Other Loyalties—A Politics
of Personality," a new volume just
issued by Atheneum (122 E. 42nd,
NY17), we have a special treat.
There are 17 sketches of notables
and of events of significance, and
we have interesting views about
matters of great concern.
There is special merit to the
essay entitled "The Guys Who
Fought in Spain." The Spanish
Civil War experiences are ably
depicted. The reader finds new
approaches to the veterans of the
Abraham Lincoln Brigade. There
are essays of imperishable in-
terest about Norman Mailer, Al-
ger Hiss, Governor George Rom-
ney.
Michiganders will be especially
intrigued by the article on Rom-
ney, in which there are details
about political activities, how he
fell short of success as "The Non-
Candidate-Candidate," the descrip-
tion of him as "the most electable
man"—"if he can only get his
thoughts together.'
"That Damned Fulbright" refers,
of course, to the Arkansas U. S.
Senator. Robert S. McNamara is
keenly observed.
Others are under scrutiny, and

Nagel's Valuable
New Israel Guide
"Israel — Nagel's Encyclopedia
Guide," published by Cowles Ed-
ucation Corporation (488 Madison,
NY22) is an enriching addition to
.the many guides already available
on the subject.
Splendidly annotated with prac-
tical information, containing valu-
able maps, brought up to date to
provide the traveler—and reader—
with information regarding the
liberated areas after the Six-Day
War, this guide serves a valuable
purpose for historians and students
of the Middle East's developments.
An essay on the history of the
land by Theodor F. Meysels pro-
vides background material for
an understanding of the area
from olden times to the present.
Data about the country's popu-
lation, descriptions of the cities
and the colonies, facts about the
holy places and the Dead Sea
Scrolls and other relevant material
adds valuably to the compilation
that serves as guide, as an inform-
ative book for students and as
background instruction for those
doing research on the Middle East.
er's concluding comment in which
he asserts:
"As a Northerner, having lived
as far north as New. Hampshire
. . . I can't really believe there is
such a thing as 'a Northland' in
the same way there is certainly a
Southland. I acknowledge t h e
regional vagueness. But if the
North has never been really a sec-
tion of the country for me, that
doesn't mean it hasn't always been
a direction. The firM direction, for
instance, in which the Underground
Railroad once moved, and the
Negro exodus from the South still
moves. The steady, fixed direction,
moreover, in which great capital
flows, culture seeks its outlets,
new ideas gravitate, large ambition
points and freedom runs. I would
hate to see the Union ever lose that
direction, because I'm enough of
a real Northerner to say frankly,
rudely, that I can sec no other it
could take."
- That's how he approaches in the
course of his resume, and especial-
ly in the concluding essay "A
Northerner Looks at His North,"
the critical issues of our time.
Merged with personality studies,
his "Other Loyalties" emerges as
an outstanding political philosophy.
