JDC Funds Depleted; Urgent Need Outlined

GENEVA — Thousands of Jews
throughout the world went without
the help they needed in 1968 as a
result of the series of crises touch-
ed off by the Six-Day War in
Israel, Samuel L. Haber, executive
vice-chairman of the Joint Distri-
bution Committee, said here.

"Emergencies such as the migra-
tion of over 2,000 Jews from Poland
following a renewed outbreak of
anti-Semitism and the flight of
4,000 Jews from Czechoslovakia
after the Soviet invasion have
forced us to divert funds from on-
going programs," Haber stated.
"As a result, services which bring
life-saving and life-giving help to
children, the aged, the sick, the
desperately poor and handicapped,
have had to be postponed, curtail-
ed or eliminated."

The JDC leader made his state-
ment after three days of discus-
sums at the annual JDC overseas
conference which ended Nov. 1.
The meeting brought together the
directors of JDC programs in
Europe, Israel, North Africa and
Iran, American communal leaders
and representatives of cooperating
agencies to review developments
in 1968 and plan the budget for the
coming year.
Haber listed specific groups of
people hurt by the diversion or ab-
sence of funds earmarked for var-
ious JDC operations in 1968, in-
cluding:

In North Africa and Iran: two
thousands aged, sick and handi-
capped Moroccan Jews received
cash relief grants inadequate to
maintain them at even a minimum
standard of health and decency.
Needed: an additional $144,000.
Twenty-eight thousand kinder-
garten and school children fed in
school canteens in M o r o c c o,
Tunisia and Iran received a diet
deficient in quantity as well as in
the amount of protective foods.
In Romania: In addition to 4,500
now receiving cash assistance an-
other 4,500 aged, sick and indigent
Jews needing relief could not re-
ceive even a minimum grant of $10
a month. Needed: at least $500,000
more; 350 elderly Jews in two pro-
vincial towns in Romania have no
kosher canteens to give them at

Predicts Israel
Will Have Nuclear
Missile Warhead

LONDON (JTA)—The editor of
the authoritative aeronautical jour-
nal, "Janes All the World's Air-
craft" said that Israel will have
missile with a nuclear warhead
within two years capable of reach-
ing Cairo, Beirut, Amman and
Damascus.
According to editor John Taylor,
the missile, a 280-mile MD-660, is
being built by Marcel Dassault, the
French aviation firm, and the nu-
clear warhead is being developed
entirely at Israel's nuclear reactor
center in Dimona. Taylor said
the missile has already been tested
in the Mediterranean.
