How Israel Surprised
BUENOS AIRES (JTA) — The

LONDON—The Daily Telegraph
reported in a copyrighted story
from Paris Wednesday that Israel
used helicopters, jeeps and three
small naval craft to carry out its
surprise commando raid into
Egypt last Thursday.
According to the report, a small
Israeli naval vessel left Eilat on
the Gulf of Aqaba, ostensibly for
routine patrol duties. But she car-
ried a helicopter on deck under a
camouflage tarpaulin and six para-
chutists in her hold, all unseen by
observers in the neighboring Jor-
danian port of Aqaba.
The vessel proceeded down the
Gulf of Aqaba, rounded the Sinai
peninsula and sailed close to the
west shores of the Red Sea to test
Egyptian radar, the Telegraph's
story said.
There was no response from
Egyptian shore batteries or air-
craft, and the first ship was
joined Thursday evening by two
others from Sharm el Sheikh,
also carrying helicopters. The
latter took off under cover of
darkness and flew at low alti-
tudes to avoid radar detection.
Each helicopter carried a jeep
and four commandos. One went to
the Quena and another to the Naj
Hammadi power station where
watchmen were overpowered and
explosives and fuses laid. The
jeeps then returned to the heli-
copters, and the commandos were
safely carried home after cutting
down telephone lines in the Nile
Valley, the report said.
(The Egyptian government still
insists that the dam and power
stations were bombed by an Is-
raeli aircraft. That claim was re-
buttled by local residents who,
according to press reports pub-
lished abroad, said they saw an
Israeli helicopter land on the
Quena Bridge).

Jewish magazine with the bless-
ings of Dr. Nahum Goldmann,
president of the World Jewish Con-
gress and former president of the
World Zionist Organization. Speak-
ing at a reception, Dr. Goldmann
said he hoped the new magazine
"Raices" ("Roots") would attract
intellectuals and youth toward Jew-
ish causes. He noted that Zionism
today is much more complicated
than it was 20 years ago.

Industrial Progress

TEL AVIV — Israel's largest in-
dustrial combine, Koor Industries
and Crafts Co., Ltd., will launch a
new managerial system to enhance
efficiency, expansion, marketing
and international commercial ties.
The Histadrut general federation
of labor, which operates the 37-
plant industrial network, this week
approved the new plan for admin-
istration of Israel's pioneering in-
dustrial network.
Meanwhile, a major Australian
firm has acquired national rights
for the Blass method of drip-root
irrigation, designed by the noted
Israeli water authority Simcha
Blass.
The system involves the use of
a network of plastic piping by
which a small ration of water
mixed with fertilizer trickles di-
rectly to the roots of plants. It is
now widely used throughout Israel.

49 Per Cent of Israelis
Oppose Raising Pigs

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — A public
opinion poll revealed that 47 per
cent of Israel's population support
the law prohibiting the raising of
pigs in nearly all parts of the
country and 2 per cent want the
law enforced in Christian Naza-
reth. Of the remainder, 43 per
cent expressed the opinion that
We must all stand together, or raising pigs was a private matter
assuredly we shall all hang sepa- which should not be regulated by
rately. —B. Franklin legislation.
