JNF,,Is Building 2 Dams in Seized Golan Heights

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Jew-
ish National Fund has built two
experimental dams in the Golan
Heights for irrigation and flood-
prevention purposes. The Kuneitra
area has been subjected to floods
in the winter, and agriculture in
the region has been neglected for
years because Syrians used the
Heights primarily as a military
encampment.
A nahal — Paramilitary settle-
ment — established shortly after
the Six-Day War near the head-
quarters of the Jordan River will
achieve kibutz status next week
when it affiliates with Kibutz Artzi
of the Hashomer Hatzair move-
ment.
The settlement occupies a site

formerly held by the Syrian Army
but on Israel's side of the interna-
tional boundary. The Jewish Agen-
cy's agricultural department will
assist the settlers until sufficient
land is made cultivable to support
them.
