Rosh Hodesh Fasting

By DR. SAMUEL J. FOX
(Copyright loos, JTA Inc.)
Some people fast on the day
before the appearance of the New
Moon. (Rosh Hcdesh)
This day is traditionally called
"Yom Kippur Katan" (the minia-
ture Vora Kippur). The Bible, in
describing the sacrifices that were
once brought to the Temple on
the day the New Moon appeared
(Numbers 28:15), speaks of a "goat
to be offered for the sin offering to
God." The rabbis interpret this
to mean that the Almighty asks
the people of Israel to bring a
sacrifice to help atone for His own
sin. It is related that ' when the
world was created, both the moon
and the sun were of equal size
and brilliance. When the moon
complained that it wasn't neces-
sary to have two large luminaries,
implying that the sun was super-
fluous, the Almighty punished the
moon by reducing it in size and
brilliance. He then acts like a
father who regrets punishing his
son and asks the people of Israel

It is customary for Jewish
women to refrain from working
on the day of the New Moon
(Rosh Hodesh).

There are two basic reasons for
this. One is that the New Moon is
listed among the holidays in the
Bible. The symbol of observance
in the case of a major holiday was
the fact that work was prohibited
that day. The day of the New
Moon is a semi-holiday. On such
occasions (just like the time of
Hanuka when the candles are
burning), women are asked to re-
frain from work to symbolize
somewhat of a holiday spirit with-
out disrupting the every-day ac-
tivities of the husbands who are
out making a living for their fam-
ilies. The other reason has to do
with the fact that the women show-
ed noble resistance when their hus-
bands asked them to give them
their golden trinkets for the casting
of the Golden Calf, refusing to
comply or be implicated in this
idolatrous act. They were, thus,
rewarded with the privilege of ab-
staining from work on every New
Moon. This generally means that
women do not do such things as
sew and weave on the day of the
New Moon.

to atone for him. The logic in
doing this is the fact that the sins
of humanity prevent and delay the
Almighty from restoring the moon
to its original brilliance. It is on
the day before the appearance of
the New Moon that the moon ap-
pears to be smallest. Man is there-
fore asked to seek repentance so
that he might fulfill the conditions
that would make it possible for the
Almighty to restore the moon to
its original size and brilliance.

Rains Deluge Israel

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Rain came
in sweeping downpours all over
Israel Oct. 30, beginning the wet
season. Agricultural experts said
the force and extent of the first
rains augured well for crops.
Even the normally parched south-
ern region experienced showers.
