`Faiths of American Presidents':
Volume's Pre-Election Timeliness

Crown Publishing Co. timed re-
lease of the book "God in the White
House—The Faiths of American
Presidents" by Edmund Fuller
and David E. Green most appro-
priately by releasing the volume
today, just before a Presidential
election.
The book describes the religious
leanings of all American Presi-
dents. Interesting research was
done on the subject by the two
authors, and some of the facts
they gathered, and the quotations
of Presidential ideas, provide in-
teresting study into the faiths of
America's chief executives.
This interesting comment in

the first chapter, titled "An Ex-
clusive Club," is worth noting:
"Most historians of modern poli-

tics believe that Al Smith would
have lost the election in 1928
even if he had not been a Roman
Catholic. It remained for John

F. Kennedy to prove that a

Roman Catholic could be elected.
There has not yet been a Jewish

President, though one candidate,
Barry Goldwater, was half Jew-
ish (but not a Jew by religions
affiliation). It seems certain
that there will be a Jewish Presi-
dent someday, as it seems equal-
ly so that we shall have a Negro
President in years to come. No
extralegal bar to the office can
persist forever, though the future
will certainly see some prejudi-
cial barriers not thought of yet,
as—can a man with a trans-
planted heart be President?"

wise."

And there are interesting refer-
ences to Kennedy's ideas relating
to abandonment of prejudices in

this country.
There are comments on "The
Jefferson Bible" and on the inter-
esting views on religion expressed
by Lincoln, Roosevelt, Truman and
others. "God in the White House"
is an enlightening work. Fuller
and Green, Episcopalian and Pres-
byterian affiliates, respectively,
write on the subject with a gold
measure of authority as trained
researchers.

• Prompt handling of small claims, to avoid
loss of time and unnecessary expense for
claimants.

• Careful attention to problems involving
juveniles, and understanding assistance to
juveniles and their parents.

• Continuous maintenance of a night court,
for the benefit of volunteer citizen-police-
men of the district's smaller communities.

• Strict adherence to zoning and health or-
dinances.

• Constant vigilance in matters of traffic
safety.

BRONSON
IS BEST!

Many unusual incidents are re-
corded in this book, and there are
some unique recollections. In the
analysis of the views of President
Ulysses S. Grant, the authors write
among other things: "In the last
sentences of his 'Personal Mem-
oirs,' urging the theme of peace
and reconciliation, Grant expresses
gratitude for the good will he en-
joyed after the tragedy of war,
`from the individual citizens of all
nationalities, from all denomina-
tions—the Protestant, the Catholic,
and the Jew; and from the various
societies of the land — scientific,
educational, religious, or other-
