THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

,

Against charges that local unions
were "assessed" to pay for the
Walter P. Reuther Chair at the
Weizmann Institute of Science,
Emil Mazey, UAW secretary, has
insisted that contributions were
strictly voluntary.
A story in the Free Press last
weekend reported that unions were
pressured into contributing to the
chair, a lectureship in peaceful
uses of atomic energy at the Israeli
institution. Mazey was national
chairman of the $100-a-plate dinner
Oct. 19 at which Reuther was hon-
ored and Israel Foreign Minister
Abba Eban spoke.
According to the Free Press,

Awards for service were made at a metropolitan division meet-
ing for workers in the Allied Jewish Campaign. Certificates were
presented to 250 volunteers who helped make the campaign a success.
Louis Barden (left), 1968 chairman of the division, gives an award
to Alan Nathan (right) who will be 1969 chairman and head the
fund-raising activity among local groups. Mrs. Joseph H. Jackier, I
president of the women's division of the Jewish Welfare Federation,
spoke to the delegates at the meeting at the Jewish Center.

some union members complained
because the dinner was publi-
cized as having been sponsored
by "friends" of Walter Reuther.
The union's share, $250,000,
would be matched by the Weiz-
mann Institute.
Mazey declared that in a letter

last summer to local unions, he
"suggested a guideline for support
which is a common practice in
fund-raising projects — including
the voluntary fair-share formula
used by the United Foundation
campaign." He said that of those
unions which contributed, some fol-
lowed the formula, others did not.
In any event, "Local unions were
not assessed nor in any way com-
pelled or obligated to help finance
the Walter P. Reuther. chair."
