LETTER BOX
`Know' Is Key Word
in Yahweh Discourse
Editor, The Jewish News:
In answer to Aaron Kutnick's
letter in the Oct. 4 paper, I would
like to suggest the following.
In Exodus 6:3, God said "but by
my name Yahweh was I not known
to them." The key seems to be in
the word "know." The sense of
verse 3 does not necessarily mean
that the name Yahweh was un-
known upon earth before the days
of Moses; but rather that Yahweh
had not manifested Himself to
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob by that
name as He was now about to
manifest Himself in Israel.
Even in the English, the verb
"know" can signify much more
than the mere acquaintance with
a name. Thus in Exodus 14:18, in
the final crisis of the crossing of
the Red Sea, God said, "The Egyp-
tians shall know that I am Yahweh
when I have gotten me honor upon
Pharoah, upon his chariots and
upon his horsemen."
Pharoah and the Egyptians
had before known Yahweh as a
name during the course of the
plagues, but they were not yet
finally convinced by manifesta-
tion of Yahweh's power that He
was indeed Lord of Egypt. So
again in 1 Samuel 2:12 "The sons
of Eli were sons of Belial; they
knew not Yahweh." They were
familiar with the name Yahweh,
but did not recognize the signifi-
cance of it nor their high calling
which related them to it.
In view of this and in view of
the occurrences of the Yahweh
name in the book of Genesis, we
conclude that the revelation of the
name Yahweh to Moses was not
the giving of a new name of God
previously unknown; rather the
pronouncement was a revival of
the name for a "memorial" of a
divine purpose revealed to Abra-
ham (Exodus 6:4) to Shem before
him, and even to Adam and Eve
Before Moses, knowledge of the
Yahweh name was more theore-
tical than experimental. Though
the name was technically known,
its fuller significance was not un-
derstood.
Not only do the names of God
correspond to His attributes as Mr.
Kutnick says, but in addition they
reveal or prophesy future manifes-
tations of God. Dr. Samuel Lee ,
former professor of Hebrew at the
University of Cambridge, says con-
cerning the name Yahweh, "The
spirit of the Scriptures goes prin-
cipally to the point of a revealed,
manifested, and known God."

Israel Extends Invitation
to Arabs on Vacation
UNITED NATIONS, N. Y. (JTA)
— Israel invited Arabs from Egypt
and other Arab countries to spend
their vacation in Israel next sum-
mer. The bid was extended by
Arye Eilan, Israel's trusteeship
committee representative, in reply-
ing to attacks voiced against Israel
during the past few days by Arabs
in the context of discussions on
Rhodesia.
Calling the committee's attention
to news reports that 15,000 Arabs
from neighboring states spent
summer vacations in Israel this
year, Eilan said: "Perhaps repre-
sentatives of Egypt and the other
Arab states will, like so many of
their compatriots, spend their next
summer vacation in Israel and
come to realize that the Arabs of
Egypt and other nations have a
long way to go before realizing the
freedom enjoyed by Israel's
Arabs."

JERUSALEM — Israeli author-
ities, apparently accepting a sug-
gestion made some time ago by
Mayor Teddy Kollek, have refrain-
ed from demolishing four houses
in East Jerusalem which belong
to members of terrorist organiza-
tions.
Instead, the buildings were
requisitioned and sealed off by
police after the owners were allow-
ed to remove their belongings.
Israeli policy since the Six-Day
War has been to blow up buildings
belonging to or used by terrorists.
This policy has been followed on
the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
In East Jerusalem, the military
blew up a house owned by a sabo-
tage unit leader. But Kollek said
at the time that houses in East
Jerusalem should be exempted
from destruction because the city
is now part of Israel.
