HOLLYWOOD—Leon Uris' latest
best-seller, "Topaz," one of the
most sought-after literary proper-
ties. is being brought to the screen
by 69-year-old producer-director
Alfred Hitchcock for Universal
Pictures. A behind-the-scene drama

trigue, it is based on a factual
case from the files of the French
Intelligence service.

"Fiddler on the Roof" will be
filmed by the Mirisch Company
to begin early in 1970 with Nor-
man Jewison as producer-director.
To date, the stage production has
been seen by more than 5,000,000
people in the United States alone.

Dalton Trumbo is writing the
screenplay to "Sylva," novel by
Vercors, the French resistance
name for artist-author Jean Brul-
ler. It is the second film from
the works by Vercors to be brought
to the screen by Universal.

Barbra Streisand has returned
to Hollywood for makeup and cos-
tume tests and rehearsals followed
by pre-recording sessions for the
forthcoming Paramount picture,

`Funny Girl' a Sellout
"Funny Girl," the movie version
of Barbra Streisand's hit Broad-
way musical, started a long run at
the Northland Theater this week.
It stars Miss Streisand as Fanny
Brice and Omar Sharif as her
gambling husband Nicky Arnstein.
Co-starred are Kay Medford, Anne
Francis and Walter Pidgeon as
Florenz Ziegfeld. The story traces
Miss Brice's dramatic rise to star-
dom in the "Ziegfeld Follies" and
her heartbreaking romance and
marriage to Arnstein.
Over a dozen songs and prod-
uction numbers are throughout the
film, including "People," "My
Man," "Don't Rain on My Parade."
"I'd Rather Be Blue" and "You
Are Woman, I Am Man."
The Variety Club is sponsoring
the local premiere of "Funny
Girl," benefiting the growth and
development wing of Children's
Hospital. Following the opening
are two weeks of almost consecu-
tive sold-out benefits and charity
theater p art i e s. A Northland
spokesman indicated that tickets
are being sold months in advance,
and that "Funny Girl" is already
the advance sale record holder
over any movie in Detroit history.
