A 15-year-old program to provide
kosher food facilities for Jewish
college students, which served
more than 400 students during the
past school year at seven major
universities, is being steadily ex-
panded, according to a report by
the National Council of Young
Israel, sponsor of the project.
The universities and the number
of Jewish students served during
the 1967-68 school year were listed
by Stanley W. Schlessel, director
of Young Israel's Intercollegiate
Council, as follows: Cornell, 75:
George Washington. 75; Syracuse.
60; Michigan, 50; Buffalo, 20; Yale,
50; John Hopkins, 75.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency
was told that there are three basic
types of kosher dining arrange-
ments in the program — restau-
rant style facilities, sandwich op-
eration facilities and pre-cooked
meal service. The restaurant ap-
proach entails renting an apart-
ment or a large house near the
university campus. The apartment
is provided with a restaurant-type
kitchen, and with the required per-
sonnel, including a kashrut super-
visor, a faculty adviser and a vol-
unteer or paid rabbi.
George Washington, Michigan,
Yale, Syracuse and John Hopkins
are sites for restaurant facilities
without dormitories, which also
operate 10 months a year with a
m a shgiakh.
