migrant arrived penniless in New York

at age 19. He worked as a dishwasher
for six dollars a week while he studied
at night school. When he died President
Herbert Hoover called him "one of
America's most useful citizens." His
remarkable inventions include the micro-
phone. His name was Emil Berliner.

His Hebrew name was Chaim and his
mother called him Harry. She sold her
jewels to pay for his education. "My
mother played the chief part in the his-
tory of my education," he gratefidly re-
called."She mapped out the program of
my studies, and even before my birth
she had begun her plans." Regularly the
tormented poet, whom the world re-
garded as cynical and embittered, wrote
affectionate amusing letters to his "dear
good little mother." "Now I shall not be
able to write to my beloved mother any
more," were virtually his last words.
Harry was Heinrich Heine.

eine's enthusiasm for Hellenism

soon gave way to a somehow very poig-
nant appreciation of the Hebraic hen - .
tage he had nominally renounced. "I'
see now," he admitted, "that the Greeks

were only handsome youths, but the
Jews were always men, mighty men,
who fought and suffered on all the bat-
tlefields of human thought." He never
failed, though, to appreciate tradition-
al delicacies. Was Mrs. Harry Heine's
home cooking responsible? Did she
cook up a choice kugel (one of his
very favorite dishes) whenever her
famous son stopped by? Who knows?
But for your sons. even if they're not
famous yet, make a memorable
