Capacity Attendance Assured for Bond Dinner11°-Friday,

With approximately a week left
for making reservations, all indi-
cations point to a capacity atten-
dance of close to 800 for the "Bond
with Israel" dinner of welcome
to Itzhak Rabin, Israel's ambas-
sador to the United States, the
heroic chief of staff of Israel's
defense forces in the historic Six-
Day War, who will address the
Israel Bond dinner, Thursday. The
event is being sponsored jointly
by the Detroit Israel Bond Com-
mittee and Cong. Shaarey Zedek,
where the event will take place.

The occasion will also honor
Cantor Jacob H. Sonenklar on
his four decades of service to
the congregation and the com-
munity. Cantor Sonenklar will
be the recipient of the Kotel
5Iaaravi (Western Wall) Award
of the Israel Bond Organization.

growth of industry and agricul-
ture, the expansion of irrigation,
the construction of roads, harbors
and railways, the increase of elec-
tric power, the exploitation of nat-
ural resources and the increased
production of exports.

open this Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.,
to accept reservations for the din-
ner and for payment of High Holy
Day pledges.

Danish Rescue Boat
Becomes Monument
at Foot of Mt. Carmel

HAIFA (JTA)—The Danish fish-
ing boat, Astrid, which was part of
a flotilla of small craft that ferried
nearly 8,000 Danish Jews to safety
in Sweden in October 1943, was

Jonas Borgeson, master of the
Astrid when she made her rescue
voyage across the narrow strait
separating Denmark from Sweden
on the night of Oct. 4, 1943.
With tear-filled eyes, he accepted
flowers from four Israeli boys and
girls—children of men and women
whom he helped save from depor-
tation by the Nazis.
The Astrid, now property of the
Haifa Maritime Museum, was pur-

Jewish Appeal's Israel Education
Fund, which is building the Den-
mark High School, Israel's largest

President Zalman Shazar paid
tribute Monday to the bravery of
the people of Denmark at a re-
ception in honor of the 500 Danish
visitors. He said "Denmark was a
beacon of light in the darkness of
Nazi Europe, and we as a nation
owe it a never-ending debt of
gratitude."
The Israeli chief of state was
presented with a gold medal by
Vigo Clemens, a veteran of the
Danish underground. Mofens Kofod
Hansen, foreign editor of Berlign-
ske Tildende, Denmark's largest
daily newspaper, presented Shazar
with a stone-age axe as "a symbol
of two people willing to fight for
their freedom and survival." Mrs.
Natlie Lind, Denmark's minister
of welfare, replied to Shazar's re-
marks on behalf of the delegation.
