Maryland's Ex-Governor- to Speak
at Benton Harbor Bond Dinner

Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin,
former governor of the state of
Maryland, will appear at the 20th
anniversary dinner for the State
of Israel Bonds at the Holiday
Inn Ballroom, Benton Harbor, 6:30
p.m. Oct. 27.
McKeldin has for many years
been active in mobilizing public
support for firIsrael's program of
economic development and immi-
grant absorption. He visited Israel
in 1955 to meet with government
officials and key businessmen,
economists and scientists, and to
witness at first hand Israel's ad-
vances toward economic growth
and expansion.
McKeldin's political career
started in 1941, when he was
elected mayor of Baltimore.
Elected governor of Maryland in
1946, he served three four-year
terms in that office, rolling up
the largest electoral majorities
ever garnered by any candidate
for that office.

McKeldin was selected as the
first president of the America-
Israel Friendship Society.
The State of Israel Bond issue
is the central source of investment
capital for Israel's program of
economic development.

Milton Kirshenbaum, WA 5-1408.

Hebrew U. Students Fret
Over High Housing Costs

NOW EXACTLY

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Students
in Jerusalem are complaining about
the high cost of housing which, in
many cases, has increased 100
per cent in the past year. The stu-
dents division of the Israel Labor
Party has called on the govern.
ment, Histadrut and the Hebrew
University to do something about
it.
The rents are high by Israeli
standards where salaried workers
average only one-third to one-half
the wages of their counterparts in
the United States. Last year, a
well-located room with a telephone
and refrigerator rented for about
$35 a month. This year the rent is
$70. A two-bedroom furnished
apartment that rented for $105 last
year now costs $175. Rents have
also gone up in outlying areas of
the city.
Students say that because of the
high rents, economic standards
rather than intelligence and abil-
ity, determine who gets a college
education in Jerusalem.
