THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS INYU _ Students Turned Down in Demands on Haehett Behalf NEW YORK (JTA) — Some 200 students held a noisy but general- ly orderly demonstration on New York University's Washington Square campus in downtown Man- hattan Monday demanding the re- instatement of John F. Hatchett, the controversial Negro teacher who was dismissed last week as director of NYU's Afro-American Student Center. The demonstrators alleged that Hatchett had been unjustly ac- cused of anti-Semitic bias and passed out leaflets defending him against such charges. But a gen- eral strike in support of Hatchett by the 42,000-member student body failed to materialize. New York University said that it would not reinstate Hatchett, who was fired after referring to Vice President Hubert H. Humph- rey, Richard M. Nixon and Albert Shanker, president of the United Teachers Federation, as "racist bastards" in a speech delivered before a student group last week. The dismissal was described by the American Jewish Con- gress as "an- encouraging indi- cation that anti-Semitism, racism and intemperate arrogance have no place in a university faculty." The AJCongress was one of several Jewish groups, along with the Catholic Interracial Council and the Protestant Coun- cil, which condemned the ap- pointment of Hatchett to the NYU post last July. provided that the student groups supporting Hatchett paid the rent. Dr. James M. Hester, NYU pre- sident, said the principal reason for terminating Hatchett's ap- pointment was that he "has prov- ed to be increasingly ineffective in performing his duties because of the incompatibility of many of his actions and public statements with the requirements of his posi- tion in the university." • • • • Veal for Scalopini Beef for Scalopini Hebrew Nat'l Delicatessen Boneless Chicken Breasts 18229 WYOMING WE DELIVER — UN 1-4770 60:14 I Certified Master Watchmaker and Jeweler OF HARVARD ROW 11 MILE and LAHSER PHONE: 353-3146 Strictly Kosher Meats and Poultry Specializing in: • Stuffed Kishka • Seasoned Meat Balls Eastland Lot 4 GEORGE OHRENSTEIN KAPLAN BROS. • Fresh, Cutup Chicken Parts • Ready Made Hamburger Patties • Oven Ready Turkeys Northland Lot G You're Invited See Page 27 • • • • • Cube Steaks Kosher TV Dinners Beef Ribs Seasoned Meat Loaf Cartwheels // /74 / FUR FAKERY As modeled by RITA BELL 5 159 WATCH RITA BELL'S PRIZE MOVIE ON CHANNEL 7 BIRMINGHAM CUSTOMERS Wear this exciting Broca- tell and ChinChelette any- where. Their opposition was based on an article which the former Har- leth school teacher wrote in No- vember 1967 in the Afro-American Forum, a Negro teachers periodi- cal. He alleged in the article that New York City's public school system was dominated by Jews who, with their "black Anglo- Saxon imitators," were poisoning the minds of Negro pupils. The AJCongress said that it hoped Hatchett would be replac- ed "by someone who is more like- ly to guide black students into harmonious relationships with their fellow students and the com- munities in which they live." About 100 students occupied two buildings on the NYU Bronx campus following Hatchett's dis- missal. The university offered a compromise under which the teacher could serve as an adviser to Negro students on the campus, using his year's severance pay as salary. Ben-Gurion, a widower now and at least officially out of politics, spent the day among close friends of the Bible circle which used to meet in the Ben-Gurions' Tel Aviv home or in the Jerusalem home of the late Itzhak Ben-Zvi when the latter was Israel's president. Later, speaking in the school which over- looks the grave of his wife, Paula, Ben-Gurion discoursed on Moses, David and Elijah. Moses was right, he declared, when he said that the Jews are a genuine and a unique nation. Then, applying the biblical lesson in an oblique criticism of the government of his political foe, Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, Ben-Gurion said: "Israel has all the characteristics bf a unique nation. We have a unique army. What we need is a special and extraordinary govern- ment. Without such a government, we shall not survive." growable potential Remember when there were just the two of you?
