most serious threats to American society

of Reform Judaism rebuked "that
alarmingly large segment of the
electorate which seems determin-
ed to counter its sense of political
hurt by not casting a Presidential
vote this year." Rabbi Maurice N.
Eisendrath, president of the Union
of American Hebrew Congrega-
tions, urged Americans to observe
"the 11th commandment — Thou
shalt not cop out."
Rabbi Eisendrath said it was
"sheer stupidity and petulance" to
"protest by noninvolvement, which
is not protest at all." He said
those who refuse to "take a hand
in correcting the real or imagined
wrongs within the body politic"
were akin to "those self-styled
liberals who withdraw from the
civil rights struggle because they
have been shocked, frightened or
rejected by black extremists."

General Zionists Win
Election in Latin America

SANTIAGO, Chile (ZINS) — In
the elections recently held by the
local Jewish community council,
the General Zionists triumphed
over the three other slates seeking
office. The four active sectors in-
volved included: the Polish, Hun-
gar i a n, Mapai-Mapam-and-Inde-
pendent, and the General Zionists.
The latter won 50 per cent of the
votes cast, and elected 25 of the

50-member council. The list of
Mapai, Mapam and the Independ-
ent received only 15 mandates, and

Max M. Fisher, chairman of Detroit's local urban affairs com-
mittee, created after the 1967 riots, New Detroit, Inc., was named
by Richard M. Nixon as his special adviser on urban and corn-
munity affairs. The noted Jewish leader, who is president of the
United Jewish Appeal, and who headed its record-breaking first
Emergency Campaign, is supporting Nixon because of his "deep
understanding of the problems of our cities and a profound knowl-
edge of the situation in the Middle East and other critical areas."

the rest of the nominees-10. As
a consequence the General Zionists
acquired the community presidency
and vice presidency, occupied re-
spectively by Professor Gil Mini
and Daniel Rachmat.
In Rosario, the second largest
Jewish community in the Argen-
tine, the General Zionists were
also victorious in the community
council elections, defeating de-
signees of Mapai and Ahdut Avoda,
Mapam and the Communists, and
wrested the leadership of the coun-
cil. Heading the General Zionist
list was David Krishkowski, chair-
man of the Zionist Organization of
Dosario.
