When Judge Joseph Pernick took
the oath of office as Wayne County
Probate Court judge Tuesday, - his
parents, who are deaf, "heard" ev-
ery word, thanks to a pair of inter- -
preters.
Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Pernick
taught their son to use sign lan- •
guage before he learned to talk.•
Tuesday, their son did his parents

court judge will fill a vacancy on
the probate court, having been ap-

Bnai Brith Foundat ion Sends 30 Tons
of Materials, Food, Drugs to Biafra

NEW YORK — A Bnai Brith
Foundation relief plane carrying
30 tons of drugs, condensed food
and clothing to Biafra left Sunday
from Kennedy Airport
The humanitarian mission, ac-
cording to Eugene L. Sugarman,
treasurer of the Jewish service
organization, is "symbolic of the
meaning of the Jewish High Holy
Days."
The cartons and cases of mer-
chandise, w or t h $250,000 and
g a t h ered by the Anti-Defama-
tion League of Bnai Brith at an
airport warehouse, were contrib-
uted by 17 firms.
The charter flight, coordinated

by Frederick Gash, an officer of
ADL, flew to Sao Tome, the Por-
tuguese island off the coast of
Biafra which has become the cen-
ter of an international relief move-
ment. The cost of the flight —
$40,000 — will be paid•for by the
Bnai Brith Foundation.
Abie Nathan, the Israeli free-
dom pilot, accompanied the ship-
ment and oversaw its trans-
ference to Catholic and Protestant-
run air shuttles to Biafra to use
in hospitals of the Catholic and
Protestant medical missions.

Rabbi Israel Halpern
to Teach 'Jewish Life' at
New Free University

Rabbi Israel I. Halpern of Cong.
Beth Abraham will teach a course
in the Jewish Way of Life in the
unique new Free University, which
opened classes Thursday at the
University of Detroit.
The Free University program
offers 32 noncredit courses taught
by experts in each particular field
working without pay. The teaching
staff includes members of the U. of
D. faculty, undergraduate students
expert in a particular field and
professionals.
With no entrance requirements,
