And everywhere is heard the hope that our papers will reflect the trust of their readers and match it with the dependability and precision it deserves." —LYNDON JOHNSON "Our free press has been the spark of vitality to the democratic experiment. It has created an in- formed electorate — people will- ing to express their ideas, people willing to listen to the ideas of others. (Detailed Story, Page 5) Fending attacks in the United Nations while meeting challenges on many fronts and facing continuing attacks by Soviet Russia in the diplomatic arena and warring Arabs on its borders, Israel commences a crucial period in defense of its position in Israel and as a member of the inter- national organization. JTA reported from the UN Tuesday afternoon that the United Nations Middle East peace envoy, Dr. Gunnar V. Jarring, is trying to arrange a meeting between Foreign 'Minister Abba Eban of Israel and Egypt's Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad. It was understood that Eban was ready to confer with Riad and that an answer to a Jarring invitation to such a meeting was awaited from Riad. JTA reported that after a conference with Secretary of State Dean Rusk at the United States UN Mission Monday, Eban told newsmen: "I am prepared to meet with any foreign minister in the world." Asked about an Eban-Riad parley, an Israeli source said Tuesday that so far no such confer- ence had been held but "we hope" it would be. Eban conferred with Lord Caradon, Britain's UN envoy, Tuesday, as well as with the Romanian and Mexican foreign ministers. Eban interrupted his diplomatic rounds here for Yom Kippur and on Thursday he went to Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., to deliver lectures on "Diplomacy in the Nuclear Age." The lectures are underwritten by Jacob and Hilda Blaustein of Baltimore. Blaustein is a Lehigh alumnus. Marvin L. Warner, president of the Cincinnati Jewish 'Federation, was named to the U.S. delegation to the General Assembly. USSR Retains Constant Naval Strength in Mediterranean (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) LONDON—The London Times' naval correspondent Tuesday reported on the strength of Soviet naval forces presently deployed in the Mediterranean and said that it is likely to re- main constant or even increased, although in the past the Russians have reduced the size of their fleet in the winter. According to the Times, the Soviet Mediterranean fleet numbers over 44 warships compared to only a dozen or so in the spring of 1967. The writer said its principal function appears to be to counter the United States Sixth Fleet and maintain surveillance of Western shipping. The most advanced unit is the new aircraft carrier Moskva, which carries helicopters. There are a dozen sub- marines, some of which carried guided missiles, a cruiser and 10 auxiliaries. Pearson Exposes Anti-Semitic Cabal Flourishing in East Europe RZPAS des JUZFS • penefamt- fa FETE des TENTZS —A 17th Centur-u Sukka Scene—From Rothschild Collection A report on the upsurge of anti-Semitism in the Iron Curtain countries, released by Drew Pearson immediately after he had left Warsaw, reveals that bigotry has risen and that the Zionist bogey is being used most extensively. In his newest revelations for his Washington Merry-Go-Round, Pearson indicates the tragic developments, the anti-Semitic evidences in the Soviet Union and the anti-Jewish hatred that "cropped up last May in Poland, a country where more than 2,000,000 Jews lost their lives during the days of Hitler." (The actual figures are that more than 3,000,000 Polish Jews died in the Nazi extermination camps and 3,000,000 Jews from other lands were transported to Buchenwald, Auschwitz and other death carmis.) Stating that anti-Semitism is on the increase in Poland "and has also been a factor in the purges of Czechoslo- vakia," Pearson's latest revealing report points to the chief culprits in the anti-Jewish campaigns and states: Chief objects of the Czech purge have been Frantisek Kriegel, president of the National Front, and Otto Sik, Pearson deputy prime minister. Kriegel is a doctor of medicine who fougnt against Franco in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, and later served with Mao Tse-tung in China. He was among those taken to Moscow handcuffed by the Russians, along with Alexan- der Dubcek, and kept in prison until President Ludvik Svoboda demanded their release. Czech refugees in Vienna told me that Svoboda had actually threatened to commit suicide unless the four Czech leaders were released. His views prevailed. But, at the end of the talks, the Soviet leaders wanted to keep Kriegel in Moscow to be tried. President Svoboda then refused to go back to Prague unless Kriegel accompanied him. Kriegel is now reported back in Prague, retired to private life and returning to the practice of medicine. (Continued on Page 5)
