LUFT (Copyright 1968, JTA Inc-) HOLLYWOOD — Walter Bern- stein, at a recent press reception in Hollywood sharing the dias with Richard Harris, Samantha Eggar and Sean Connery, told us that bis new Paramount production of "The Molly Maguires" in spite of the gay label is neither a musical nor a comedy. On the contrary, the motion picture currently before the cameras, with Martin Ritt at the helm, depicts one of the most tragic episodes in the past history of the United States. The title "The Molly Maguires" represents a secret organization of Irish immigrant coal miners in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, who joined together in the early 18705 to fight for better living conditions and a minimum wage law but lost out and were hung, still protesting injustice. Richard Harris portrays the leader of the rebels, Sean Connery an Irishman who works for the police. Bernstein, who wrote the orig- inal screenplay, in addition to func- tioning as co-producer with Marty Rift, reveals that the miscarriage of justice of 1877 has haunted him ever since he read about the trag- edy on the sideline of the indus- trial revolution while doing re- search for a thesis on American history as a student at Dartmouth College. As it is with some writers, the germinal idea for "The Molly Maguires" was with him for 27 years before it came to the crea- tive development. of a motion pic- ture screenplay. * * * MARK ROBSON has entered a co-production deal with Universal Studios for the filmization of "Roundabout" from a Frederick Raphael screenplay with Philip Barry, Jr. as producer and Rob- son as director. The top-budgeted contemporary love story, to go before cameras early next year, marks Robson's return to Univer- sal after a 17-year absence. The director of Kramer's "Champion" and "Home of the Brave" cur- rently films "Daddy's Gone A- Hunting" starring British import Carol White now on location in San Francisco. Robson last directed "Valley of the Dolls" which has become the largest non-roadshow grosser in the history of 20th-Cen- tury-Fox. He is also preparing "The Plot" from the Irving Wal- lace best-seller for the latter com- pany. Frederick Raphael, author of "Roundabout," is a novelist and screenwriter from England. Two of his six books were adapted by him for the screen, "Two For the Road" and the Academy-Award winning "Darling." * * DALIAH LAVI, the Israeli film star who rose to international prominence with "Two Weeks in Another Town," "Casino Royale" and "Lord Jim," currently com- pletes in London a comedy with murder, one of the new Bulldog Drummond films in which Richard Johnson replaces the late Ronald Colman. "J. B.," a verse drama by Arch- ibald MacLeish, will be presented Nov. 2, 3, 6, 9 and 10. Set in a circus tent, and based on The bib- lical story of Job, this play af- firms man's capacity to endure and love. Drawing closely on Scrip- ture, MacLeish shifts the emphasis from God's glory to man's heroic acceptance of life. "J.B." will be directed by Harry Goldstein, a founder and the managing direc- tor of the Actors' Company. On Feb. 15, 16, 19, 22 and 23, Moss Hart's comedy, "Light up the Sky," will provide a view of the theater world, directed by Hal Youngblood of WJR's radio Program, "In Contact." Center Theater's final offering, "Right You Are" by Luigi Piran- dello, will be presented May 3, 4, 7, 10 and 11. This play states the thesis that one knows the truth if he thinks he does and that the same statement applies to one's neighbor. In a provincial town in Italy, the strange goings-on of a newly arrived family provide op- portunity for seeking the truth. The audience must decide how successful the search has been. Season tickets are on sale now at the Jewish Center, or may be obtained with the order blank on this page. For information, call Center Theater, DIamond 1-4200. Protest Against Bigotry in E.
