Dr. Voss' In Search of Meaning' Reviews
World's Religions, Affirms Resort to Faith,
Having earned a place among
the most brilliant interpreters of
theological questions, a leader in
civic movements, Dr. Carl Herm-
ann Voss adds immeasurably to
his record of literary creations with
"In Search of Meaning: Living
Religions of the World," published
by World Publishing Co. as an
Excalibur Book.
Dr. Voss, editor of Excalibur
Books, named after the King Ar-
thur legendary sword, aimed to
"evaluate the past to appreciate
and absorb its rich legacies, ap-
praise the present, and seek mean-
ing amid so much that appears to
be meaningless."
The immense value of his latest
work lies in his objective approach
to the religions of the Far East—
Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism,
Shintoism, Confucianism and Tao-
ism—and the Middle East—Juda-
ism, Christianity and Islam. The
clarity with which he evaluates his
subjects, the dedication with which
he searches for the meanings in
the various faiths, cause his book
to stand out among the many vol-
umes that have dealt with the
world's religious faiths.
His analyses inspire faith. He
commences in an introduction
entitled "Across a Void of Mys-
tery and Dread" with a state-
ment in which he asserts: "This
was the beginning of religion:
the efforts men made to accept
and to adapt themselves to the
world about them. Their environ-
ment was, for the most part,
puzzling and unpredictable, hos-
tile and at times destructive. Yet
it might be full of beauty and
joy; it might bring a measure of
comfort and, in certain seasons
and places, an amazing abund-
ance. Life could be cruel and
hard and was apparently meant
to be brief; but above all else it
was uncertain. Men could not
control the elements of sea and
sky, forest and field. He might
kill wild beasts, catch huge fish,
vanquish old enemies, conquer
a nearby tribe; but in the world
about him and in the life he so
precariously live d, disasters
came swiftly, without warning.
Forces and powers over which
he bad no sway triumphed and
seemed always to be ultimately
victorious."
In this fashion he reviews man's
struggles and the reigning confus-
ions, pointing out bow "mankind's
ceaseless search for meaning"
found answers and comforts in
faith.
His essay on "People of the Cov-
enant" in which he speaks about
Judaism is interesting in that, as
in other analyses, he outlines the
historic events that affected Jewish
history—leading up to the present
—and his evaluative explanations
of Jewish traditions and beliefs.
He commences with the ancient
_Hebrews' belief in the One God,
the "I Am Who I Am"—the ehyeh
asher ehyeh—evolving out of the
confrontation at Mount Sinai and
the Ten Commandments which
serve as a basis for the begin-
nings of this portion of his text.
Dr. Voss, whose book is illus-
trated by Eric Carle, serves as a
brief commentator on Prophets
and Prophecy.
Discussing talmudic writings he
relates the background of the Heb-
raic form of the Golden Rule, ex-
plains the framework of Jewish
culture and the structure of Juda-
ism as a religion.
Dr. Voss reviews events by
pointing to the tragic period of the
Crusades and other eras that chal-
lenged Jewry. He tells about the
emergence of Yiddish as a lang-
uage, defines the Jewish festivals,
tells about the love for Zion, and
as an eminent Christian Zionist
indicates the rebirth of Israel, the
revival of Hebrew, the archaeolog-
ical findings, the determination
that: "Masada shall not fall again."
He concludes the Covenant
story by asserting: "The Jews of
the modern world—descendants
of the Patriarchs a n d the

Judges, the Prophets and the
Talmudists — still repeat their
ancient chant: 'Hear, 0 Israel,
the Lord thy God is One.' "
He entitles his chapter on Christ-
ianity "The Greatest of These Is
Love" and he credits the thoughts
of the founders of the Christian
faith with "thoughts .-. . in accord
with the centuries-old tradition of
the Hebrew faith."
Again, his essay is an historic-
ally-evaluated account of the em-
ergence of Christianity and of the
awareness of the debt to Judaism.
So, also, in dealing with Islam,
with its Prophet Mohammed, he is
the historian as well as the re-
viewer of theological ideas, and
this chapter concludes:
"At the heart of Islam is the
tie to the Judaeo-Christian tradi-
tion. As Jews and Christians echo
the familiar verse of the 111th
chapter, 'The fear of the Lord is
the beginning of wisdom,' so Mos-
lems repeat the lines from the
Koran: 'The head of wisdom is
the fear of Allah.' "
"We Are the Heirs," as the
concluding chapter, points to the
teachings of Hillel: "What is
hateful to you, do not to your
fellowman. This is the entire
Law: all the rest is Comment-
ary."
Dr. Voss does not ignore the
tensions of our time, the phil-
osophic differences among men,
the Vietnamese situation, but he
ends with a hopeful note:.
"Men have always faced tragedy
and death, tried to seek good and
shun evil; they have fought bore-
dom and despair and sought to
