Israel to Restore Church Buildings Damaged in War DRY CLEANING PLANT LARKINS MOVING THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS JERUSALEM - Israel has con- cluded $1,500,000 in agreements with 15 churches and religious or. ders here for property damaged in the Six-Day War. The agreements concern 32 church properties, from major re- ligious structures to a hotel. Much of the damaged property is atop Mt. Zion, in the strip of no-man's land that split the Israeli and Jor- danian sectors of Jerusalem since 1948. The Israelis decided to offer payments regardless of whether the damage was caused by Israeli or Jordanian guns. Celebrating the agreement at an informal ceremony in the ministry of justice building, the Chaldean- Catholic Patriarchal Vicar said he hoped God blessed Israel twice for her gesture. Five cemeteries that were un- tended for the past 20 years will be restored under the agreement. Hebron Jews, Moslems in Tiff Over Tomb (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM — A conflict has developed between the Moslem re- ligious authorities in Hebron and a group of Orthodox Jewish settlers who have demanded permission to hold Yom Kippur prayers at the Patriarch's Tomb, which is now covered by a mosque. The settlers have appealed to Minister of Justice Yacov S. Sha- piro, who is acting minister for re- ligious ,affairs while Dr. Zerach Warhaftig Is abroad. Shapiro was to meet with Defense Minister Gen. Moshe Dayan Wednesday, and their joint decision on the matter would be binding. The Moslem Waof, which holds authority over Moslem shrines in Hebron, has objected to the Yom Kippur prayers. They said that I under their agreement with the military governor, Jews are al- lowed to visit the Patriarchs' Tomb only at specified hours. It's Judge Gubow Now Receiving a friendly reception, highly commended by U. S. Sena- tors, Lawrence Gubow, U.S. at- torney for Eastern Michigan, last Friday was unanimously endorsed for the federal judgeship to which he was nominated by President Johnson. The Senate Judiciary Committee heard " Gubow at a brief hearing, and the approval w as speedy. U. S. Senator Robert P. Griffin of Michigan strongly en- dorsed Gubow's appointment in a statement to the judiciary com-, mittee. He spoke'- of the appoint- ee's "d is ti n- guished c a reer as an attorney." Judge Gubow S'enator Griffin pointed out that Gubow, a 1951 University of Mich- igan law school graduate, after being associated with the law firm of Rosin and Kobel, was assigned to the Michigan Corporation and Securities Commission, of which he was chief commissioner, and was named U.S. Attorney in 1961 by President Kennedy. Gubow is currently president of the Jewish Community Council and for many years has been among the national leaders of the Jewish War Veterans. Senator Griffin pointed to these affiliations and added in his recommendation that Gubow's nomination should be approved: "I know Mr. Gubow as an able and highly qualified member of the Bar and as .a widely respected public servant, He has bipartisan support for his nomination, and I am confident that he will make an outstanding judge." Nixon Issues Rosh Hashana Messages (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) Richard M. Nixon, Republican candidate for President, issued Rosh Hashana greetings to the Jewish community. The message follows: "To my fellow citizens of the Jewish faith, I extend heartfelt New Year greetings — L'Shana Tova— and join in your prayer that the year 5729 will bring peace, progress and prosperity to, all mankind. "According to Jewish tradition, the Commandments were given to the Jewish people not merely as a personal possession, but as a blessing for all mankind. If all nations could but live up to this great heritage, with its inspired religious and ethical concepts, this would indeed be a far better world. "Our fervent wish for your own beloved country is for men of all LOS ANGELES — faiths and races to live together in peace under law and justice. For without these requisites, the democracy to which we are all dedicated simply be'omes a word, not a way of life. "This is true of the entire world as well as the United States. "For the people of Israel, we pray for a genuine and enduring peace, - "To the Jews behind the Iron Curtain suffering the ravages of anti-Semitism and discrimination— as well as to the other oppressed citizens of those countries — we offer our prayers for their freedom and equality. "Let us hope that in the year 5279 there will be an adherence among people of all races and creeds to these ancient ideals that are the keystone of our Western civilization." Dachau Memorial Dedicated on Site of Nazi Death Camp DACHAU, W. Germany (JTA)- There is nothing that specifically relates to the Nazi extermination of the Jews in the monument and museum which now stand on the site of the notorious Dachau con- centration camp. But the camp was one in which men and women of some 20 nationalities suffered indignities and death, and the memorial was designed to com- memorate all of them, its sponsors explained to the Jewish Tele- graphic Agency, That memorial was dedicated Sunday in the presence of a group of Dachau survivors and some 2,000 local and foreign guests, among them the Israel ambassa- dor to West Germany, Asher Ben- Nathan, Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, Mayor Karl Schuetz of West Berlin and others includ- ing delegations from Soviet Rus- sia and various Communist bloc countries. ROSEN ADVERTIS- ING, Lathrup Village, has been appointed to handle all advertising and promotion for Tamaroff Buick- Opel Inc., Southfield. •• It is estimated that 50,000 per- sons died at Dachau between 1933 and 1945, though only 30,000 of them were officially recorded. Only 3,000 Jews were found when the camp was liberated. The memorial monument in front of the museum of Dachau relics was sculpted by the Yugoslavian-Jew- ish artist Nid Glandor. It repre- sents a group of twisted bodies in attitudes of anguish and agony. Underneath is the inscription, "May the example of those who were exterminated here between 1933 and .1945 because they resist- ed Nazism, help unite the living for the defenie of peace and free- dom." Militant left-wing German youth tried to disrupt the memorial ob- servance with what appeared to be an anti-American demonstration. They broke into the ceremonies carrying flags with anti-American inscriptions and chanted anti- American and anti-Nazi slogans. When ushers ejected them, the youngsters started fistfights.
