Nun Also Wept at the Wall . . •

By NATHAN ZIPR1N

(A Seven Arts Feature)

Sister Felicia lives in quiet sanc-
tity in a quiet village in West-
chester, N. Y., spending her
days "far from the maddening
crowd" in a school for adolescent
girls conducted by the Sisters of
St. Mary's in the Field. The girls
for the most part are socially and
emotionally disturbed and the dedi-
cation of the school and the nuns
is to heal -their mutilated spirits
and repair if possible the damage
that had been visited upon them
by a disturbed social order.
The task is a challenging one,
demanding almost round-the-clock
concentration. But the world has
changed for nuns—even as it has
changed for all of us—and there
is growing awareness in many a
cloister of the new climate and of
the need of widening horizons. This
writer has no way of determining
Sister Felicia's views of the world
of today, but she is- a poetess and
that is what counts with him.
Some months . ago, Sister Felicfa
came across a picture of an agony-

torn Israeli soldier standing bent
in weeping and in wishing before
the Wailing Wall with a gun on
his side. The picture moved her to
tears, compassion and poetizing in
a manner as if she, a true Chris-
tian woman, tco had been among
our ancients who stood at Sinai,
and she created what in this
writer's judgment is a masterpiece
in human depth.

THE SOLDIER WEEPING AT
THE WESTERN WALL
By Sister Felicia
Community of St. Mary's
Asa, my uncle, died at the wall—
In a village called Lubin, he died at
the wall,.
With twenty-six others
Th e SS shot them all.-
For him, and for them, I weep at
the Wall.

Sarah, my cousin, died at the wall—
In a chamber at Auschwitz, she died
at the wall,
With a child at her breast,
So hungry—so small.
For her and the child, I weep at the
Wall.

Sholom, my brotner, died at the wall.
On the Syrian border, he died at the
wall
Of the house he had built:
He was rugged and tall.
For my brother Sholom, I weep at
the Wall.

0 God of my lathers, I fought for
this Wall
For my uncle and those who fell
with him—for all; -
For my cousin, her baby, so hungry,
so small
For my brother Sholom—rugged and
tall.
Now let my tears win the right—just
to fall.

28 Collegians Find Roots
on Europe, Israel Mission

NEW YORK — By the time 28
American university students re-
turned from a recent seven-week
study mission to the old Jewish
centers of Europe and the new
Jewish h9meland of Israel, two of
the young men had celebrated be-
lated Bnai Mitzva at the Wailing
Wall, and three others planned to
attend an -Israeli university.
These were the most visible re-
sults of the mission, which w a s
sponsored by the United Jewish
Appeal to give the sons of promin-
ent Jewish community leaders a
close look at the remnants of Euro-
pean Jewry and the promise of
Israel. The parents paid for the
trip.

I wish all my dear customers

Holiday. Greetings

Prof. Henry Braun, 'who teaches
English at Temple University in
Philadelphia, has gained distinc-
tion as a poet and his small vol-
ume, "The Virgil Gods," just pub-
lished by Atheneum (122•E. 42nd,
N.Y. 17), is an indication of the
universality of his themes.
He writes abouth "Myths" and
