Ex-Soviet Jew
Exposes Russian
:Anti-Semitism

"To . be a Jew in the Soviet
- Union is, even today, something
that instills in those who bear the
label a vague sense of guilt. It
conveys, at times in a tangible
way, a sense of being in some way
inferior," Leonid Vladimirov de-
clares in a new book, "The Rus-
sians," published by Frederick A.
Praeger, Inc.
Vladimirov, whose real name is
Leonid Vladimirovitsh Finkelstein,
is an ex-Soviet Jew who spent five
and a half years in prison for a
careless remark about Soviet anti-
Semitism. He was 43 years old
when he announced, while visiting
London in 1966, that he would not
return to his homeland. He left
behind his family and "a good,
even enviable public position in
Moscow" as a writer for Pravda;
Izvestia , Literaturn ay a Ga zeta ,
and other publications.
"The Russians" is a personal
account of what being a Russian—
and a Russian Jew—is really like.
Speaking of the "inferiority" of
the Russian Jew, Vladimirov
states: "It is for this reason that
many children of mixed marriages
choose to be registered as 'Rus-
sians.' It also explains why many
people change their obviously
Jewish names to more innocent
Russian ones. This will not alter
the notation of background on
one's passport, but it will permit
the bearer to breathe a bit more
easily in public. Most Jewish
writers and journalists in the
Soviet Union, for this reason, have
chosen to work -behind pseudo-
nyms. I was one of these."

ADL said, including "the notor-

Benjamin R. Epstein, national
