The authors of "The Jewish
Wedding Book, the -mother-daugh-
ter team who authored the com-
pendium of practices and beliefs
related to the Jewish wedding,
point out that the outdoor wed-
ding is an old Jewish custom.
They add that not only did the
ceremony in the Middle Ages in-
variably take place in the court-
yard of a synagogue, but it was
considered a good omen for the
! wedding to take place under the
stars, that the children of the
couple would be "as numerous as
the stars in heaven."
The authors, wife and daughter
of a prominent rabbi, have gone
deep. into the sources of Judaic
laws and customs to bring to the
modern American-Jewish bride
and bridegroom an understanding
of the rituals -15f their wedding.
They have taken into account the
three major divisions of American
Jewry—Reform, Orthodox and Con-
servative—and fully explain the
practices *held in common by all
three as well as those in which
they differ..
The book includes a glossary
which defines all the meaingful
Hebrew terms.

Solidarity Marks
Jewry's Actions,
Dr. Haber Declares

Dr. William Haber, president of
American ORT Federation, in a
statement issued on the eve of
Rosh Hashana, before he and Mrs.
Haber left for another study tour
of Israel, declared that "the uni-
versal solidarity of Jews every-
where when the fate of Israel hung
in the balance" is a major les-
son of last year's events. .
"American Jews and communi-
ties elsewhere are deterinined nev-
er to be found wanting," Dr. Haber
added. "Commitment to the safety
and welfare of our people in need
and distress has been seared into
our collective conscience. And if
the pall of ultimate fear has been
lifted, it is also abundantly trans-
parent that the tasks -we have
shouldered, eagerly and voluntari-
ly, wait for us in the year ahead.
"But these tasks are not the
same as before because the Jew-
ish scene has changed, and with it
the Priorities that call for response.
"Israel cannot wait to renovate
its economy and create a viable
industry-based, modern pattern for
the livelihood of its people. And
that means not only capital, but
skills, and skills of high order.
"We dare not allow the tens of
thousands of Egyptian, Libyan and
other North African Jews who were
victimized and displaced last June
to become the forgotten Jews of
our times. They need help not only
in Israel, but in France, in Italy
and elsewhere. Their fate will nev-
er appear on the agenda of the
United Nations because there is no
one else to care unless we do."
