The premiere engagement of
"The Fifth Horseman Is Fear,"
a searing indictment of the Third
Reich, begins Wednesday at the
Studio I Theater.
It is a film from the New Czech-
oslovak Cinema about a Jewish
physician forbidden to practice in
I Nazi-occupied Prague. Dr. Braun
is reduced to being an employe at
a vast, 'old synagogue that has
been transformed into a warehouse
for the confiscated property of
Jews who -have been "trans-
ported."
Dr. Braun removes a bullet from
a political fugitive and, at personal
risk, searches for morphine. His
search takes him to a brothel for
the Nazis to a bar where he, finds
others awaiting the same fate he
faces.
The police arrive soon after
Braun administers the drug, but
they are unsuccessful; the fugitive
flees.
Periodically, throughout the film,
a radio speech is heard praising
"our beloved leader," asking for
"great sacrifices," and exhorting
the people to "inform promptly
and accurately" on any suspicious
actions by telephoning 44811.
It is an informer who brings
about Dr. Braun's death, by sui-
cide. Yet it is a courageous death.
Dr. Braun does not give in to the
bestiality•around him.
