Having won approval of his nom-
ination for the chief justicesiiip in
the 11-6 vote of the Senate Ju-
diciary Committee, Mr. Justice
Abe Fortas now faces an almost

When the debate on the nomina-
tion starts on Monday. There is a
prevailing belief that it will be dif-
ficult to get a two-thirds vote to
stem the flow of words in the fill-
buster. But a slight hope is re-
tained that the move led by Mich-
izan s junior senator, Robert Grif-
fin, will not succeed. Griffin's
major backer in the filibuster'
move is South Carolina's Senator
Strom Thurmond.
