BRIGHT LITES—BAD SHOWS

There's an usher in a Broadway
theater that hasn't housed a hit
show in three years—just a dreary
succession of "turkeys" that close
after five or 10 dismal perfor-
mances. "I'll tell you how bad it
is," volunteers this usher. "I
haven't had to change my flash-
light batteries since 1965!"

TEL AVIV (JTA)—The first lady
of the Yiddish theater, Ida Ka-
minska, former director of the
Warsaw State Yiddish Theater,
who arrived here Friday, ex-
pressed relief that "at last one can
breathe freely."

ing immigrants. She was accom-
panied by her husband and grand-
daughter and was met here by her
brother, Josef Kaminsky, first
violinist in the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra.
Miss Kaminska was unable to
say whether she would establish
permanent residence in Israel.
"The fact that I am here," she
said, "says much and speaks for
itself." She said she would not
organize a Yiddish theater here
but was ready to direct one if
someone established it.

LISTENING

THIS YEAR'S Detroit Tiger
World Series Souvenir Book will
be the largest ever in the history
of the October classic, according
to Tiger Publications boss, Herman
Goldman . . . It'll be 120 pages
from cover to cover, almost twice
as much as the one planned for
last year's near miss . . . The 1940
book was 40 pages and in 1945
when the Tigers won with Hank
Greenberg and company, owner
Walter 0. Briggs refused to allow
a n y advertising in it, so t h e
souvenir was only 20 pages . .

HERMAN RECEIVED A phone
call from someone last week who
told him they had gone to school
together and that Herman was
often thought about . . . Seems
that they hadn't seen or talked to
each other in 30 years . . . and
the fellow called just to say hello
. . . The fact that he wanted tickets
to the World Series had nothing to
do with it! .. . But when Herman
told him he couldn't get any
tickets, the gent cried, "A fine
friend you are!" and hung up.
LEO HOLLANDER, former math
teacher at Oak Park High, now a
space research engineer in Hunts-
ville, Ala., is in charge of t h e
astronaut safety project of the up-
coming moon shot in October .. .
Leo is working under Werner von
Braun in Huntsville . . . Wife Har-
riet and two sons, 8-year-old Kevin
and 1-year-old Jeffrey were here
recently to visit with her parents,
Faye and Mannie Mackie, who had
to tie down everything in the house
. . . Jeffrey wanted to send the
household insides flying to t h e
moon! . . . The Mackie Scotch ter-
rior, Plaid, was practically plead-
ing dog fashion for Jeffrey to go
home! . . . Leo to the rescue via
space as he flew here to get his
family, visit awhile and then drive
back.

MAURICE LAHR is now in Sinai
Hospital and could certainly use
some spirit uplifting . . . Visita-
tions or just cards . . . Maurice
never had too much time for a
social life because of the long
hours needed in the produce busi-
ness . . ,He owned and onerated
the Million Produce Company in
the Western Market for almost 40
years . . . So whether you know
Maurice or not, say hello to a
gent who since last year has lost
both legs and suffered the passing
of his wife . . but never com-
plains . . . Maurice needs us now
.. . let's not let him down!
STEVEN FELDMAN, 14-year-old
son of Alice and Henry Feldman,
is the new Michigan Open Junior
Chess champion . . . Steven, a stu-
dent at Frost Junior High in Oak
Park, has been playing chess since
he was 7 years old, and last year
took the junior division title in the
Motor City Open . . . the Michigan
finals were held in Lansing.
SUSAN LYNN of Oak Park is
eagerly anticipating her motion
picture debut . . . She won the
recent "Rosemary's Baby Mystery
Voice" Contest on WJBK, spon-
sored by Paramount Pictures by
guessing Ralph Bellamy, and will
receive an all-expense-paid trip to
Hollywood with barrister hubby
Kenneth . . . Their 2-year-old
daughter Julie will also go along,
and Susan will receive an appear-
ance in William Castle's next
movie for Paramount.
THAT LOCAL DISC jockey who
said, "The Detroit Tigers will find
some way to lose the pennant,"
isn't saying much these days .
He never did have anything to

say, even when he was talking!
