McDonough was accused by a Newark attorney, Myron S. Leh- man, of acting to prevent sale to the Lehman family of a house owned by Christian Heidt. During the hearing, Mc- Donough denied being anti-Se- mitic, and several witnesses testified on his behalf. Mrs. Heidt testified that McDonough had used anti-Semitic language in seeking to persuade the Heidts not to sell their home to the Lehmans because they were Jewish. She said that McDonough had told her, after learning of the planned sale of the Heidt home to the Lehmans, that "he did not like Jewish people" and that "he would not have them live next door to him." He admitted telephoning Mrs. Heidt, but he said it was only to ask whether the Leh- mans had young children. Myron Levin, housing super- visor for the division, said no effort had been made to fine Mc- Donough because a case was still pending to determine whether the division had that power. Thomas Durkin, McDonough's attorney, said he would appeal on grounds that the civil rights division has no enforcement powers. He said he also was critical of the handling of the case by Pious, who has since resigned to take a federal government post. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, September 6, 1968-15 387 Day Schools Open Throughout U.S., Canada NEW YORK — A total of 387 Hebrew day schools—at least 10 of which are new ones—are open- ing their doors this month to a projected day school enrollment in the United States and Canada which will for the first time possibly exceed a total of 70,000. A joint report issued at the start of the new school year by Samuel C. Feuerstein, president of Tora Umesora, the National Society for Hebrew Day Schools, and Dr. Joseph Kaminetsky, national di- rector, called attention to the aid given by Tora Umesora in the establishment of the new schools- 348 in the United States and 39 in Canada. Stressing the rapid increase in the number of Hebrew day schools on the high school level, Dr. Kaminetsky and Feuerstein pointed out that seven of the 10 new schools are high schools and that attention also is being directed toward the need for Hebrew day school facili- ties for girls. Four out of the seven new high schools are for girls exclusively. Cricket Player John I. Marder is leading the United States cricket invasion of Great Britain. Singapore Uses Israeli Defense System, Advisers (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) NEW YORK — The island re- public of Singapore has chosen the Israeli system of defense and is relying heavily on Israeli advisers to build its security system, ac: cording to a report from Singa- pore in the current issue of the Atlantic Monthly, a leading na- tional review. The article, by Arthur C. Miller. the magazine's Southeast Asia cor- respondent, pays tribute to Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and the Singapore leaders who "do not assume to know everything and quite openly search for ideas and help from others." Asked "What kind of armed forces would Singapore require?" Yew replied that the government studied several countries' training systems. It chose Israel's. "Today, some 20 Israeli advisers, sometimes referred to as 'our Mexican busi- nessmen' because of the sensitivi- ties of Singapore's Muslim neigh- bors, are putting young Singapore citizens through their paces and molding them into the hard core of the island's defense forces. All able-bodied men (and starting next year, women, in good Israeli fashion) between the ages of 19 and 45 must do national service. Singapore, in effect, plans to make Its entire adult population into some form of defense force, rang- ing from the hard-core military units to a popular ragtag vigilante corps."
