Annie Manis, 73 Annie Manis, an active member of several Jewish organizations, died Monday at the age of 73. Mrs. Manis, 13740 Nadine, Oak -- _ .ark, belonged to Rovner Lacho- witcher Aid Society, Cong. Beth Shalom, Hebrew Benevolent Soci- ety and the Jewish National Fund Women's Auxiliary. Born in Russia, Mrs. Manis lived in the Detroit area 56 years. Survivors are her husband, Sam- uel; three daughters, Mrs. Clar- ence (Elaine) Guttentag, Mrs. Irv- ing (Mae) Gooze of Rochester, N.Y. and Mrs. Harold (Helen) schner; three brothers, Joseph binovitch of Miami, Simon Ra- novitch of Puerto Rico and Na- an Rabinovitch of Lakeland, Fla.; o sisters, Mrs. Sarah Kraft and Mrs. Zelda Blackman; and eight grandchildren. Buenos Aires Cantor BUENOS AIRES (JTA)—Abra- ham Blecharowitch, cantor of one of this city's leading synagogues and a former operatic performer, died here Aug. 19 at age 56. Can- tor Blecharowitch served the Con- gragacion Israelita de la Republi- ca Argentina for the past 20 years. He was born in Bukovina and studied music at the Vilna conser- vatory. He was director of the na- tional opera in Riga, Latvia, and appeared on the stage with the not- ed Russian tenor Feodor Chaliapin and the soprano Toll Del Monte in "Rigoletto." Later in his career, he special- ized in liturgical music and served synagogues in Warsaw and Bu- charest. He came to Buenos Aires after the Second World War. Bernard LeCache of Paris, Foe of Anti-Semitism PARIS (JTA) -- Bernard Le- Cache, president of the Interna- tional League Against Anti-Semit- ism, died here Aug. 20. Mr. LeCache was editor of the newspaper, Le Droit which com- batted anti-Semitism and frequent- ly defended Israel in the French press. Mr. Margoshes, known for his writings in Yiddish and Hebrew periodicals both here and abroad, had continued to write his English language column in the Day until his illness several months ago. For the last 15 years, Dr. Mar- goeshes was director of public re- lations for the Jewish National Fund of America. Born in Galicia, he came to this country as a young man and re- ceived a master's degree from Columbia University and a doctor of Hebrew letters from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Former president of the World Congress for Jewish Culture and vice president of the Jewish Writers Union, Dr. Margoshes helped young Yiddish play- wrights have their plays pro- duced and was leader of Yiddish intellectual circles. He was a member of the Actions Committee of the World Zionist Congress and executive of the Jew- ish Agency. While vice president of the American Jewish Congress, he joined the late Dr. Stephen S. Wise in sponsoring a demonstra- tion at Madison Square Garden in 1934 to protest the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany. He also helped initiate a boycott of German goods. Edward Rice, Age 58 Edward Rice, collection supervi- sor for Creditors Service, 12730 W. Seven Mile, died Tuesday at age 58. Mr. Rice, a native Detroiter, re- sided at 15235 Miller, Oak Park. He was an active member of Cong. Beth Abraham. Survivors are his wife, Helen; a son, Dennis; five brothers, Jack, Walter of Chicago, Ralph, Harold and Martin; and two sisters, Mrs. Maynard (Dorothy) Patler and Mrs. Ronald (Barbara) Bernstein of Chicago. 15,000 Acres in New Land to Be Reclaimed by JNF JERUSALEM ,-- Within the nit two years, the Jewish National Fund will reclaim 60.000 dunams (15,000 acres) of land most of which is situated in the new ter- ritories, it was announced by Jacob Tsur, JNF chairman, in a recent press conference. Half of the projected work will be concentrated on the Golan Heights, where preparations are already in full sway, and which is planned to help the eight Jewish settlements pioneering this poten- tially fertile area. Further major land reclamation will be affected in the Etzion hills, Latrun Valley and Arava.
