Romanian Chief Rabbi Sees Danger to `Socialist So li dari ty' in Intervention
LONDON (JTA) — Chief Rabbi
Moses Rosen of Romania, said
here Tuesday that "nothing could
do more harm to the ideals of
justice, freedom and peace, for
which all Socialist countries strive,
than the methods of force such
as the armed intervention and oc-
cupation of the territory of one
socialist country by another."

Dr. Rosen's remark, a reference Parliament, told JTA that he was
to last week's Soviet-led invasion going to Buenos Aires to attend
of Czechoslovakia, was made in an
interview by the Jewish Telegra-
phic Agency during the rabbi's
brief stop-over here on his way to
South America.
The Romanian-Jewish leader,
Ida Kaminska Heading for Israel
as Poles Close the Yiddish Theater
PARIS (JTA)—The Paris news-
paper Le Monde reported that Ida
Kaminska .of the state-sponsored
Yiddish theater of Poland has left
that country along with several
other members of the troop and is
now in Vienna en route to Israel.
The report said that about 45
Polish-Jewish intellectuals decided
to leave the country because of
the officially inspired anti-Jewish
campaign there.
The Jewish State Theater in
Warsaw has been closed. Mrs.
Kaminska was said to have been
happy state. She said she was
given a "very nice" send-off by
non-Jewish friends and admirers
as well as by Jews and had no
difficulty leaving Poland.
Miss Kaminska would not say
where she planned to settle perm-
anently. She has a brother in Is-
rael, Yosef Kaminska, who is first
violinist with the Israel Philhar-
monic Orchestra, and her husband
also has a brother in Israel.

approached by Polish authorities
prior to her departure to do anti-
Israel propoganda work.
Miss Kaminska told newmen in
Vienna Wednesday that she had
no plans to return to Poland. She
arrived Tuesday with her husband,
the actor-producer Meir Melman,
on what was described as an ex-
tended visit.
The actress' departure from
Poland followed a revival of
last spring's officially inspired
anti-Jewish campaign in that
country — this time in an effort
to justify Poland's participation
in the Soviet-led invasion of
Czechoslovakia on grounds that
"Zionist" plotters had taken
over the Czech Communist Party.
But she refused to comment on
the political situation in her
homeland. She told reporters,
however, that "there is anti-
Semitism everywhere, including
Poland; the only place without
it is Israel."
Asked about the fate of her
Yiddish theater. Miss Kaminska
said she couldn't forecast its fu-
ture but had not left it in a very
Population Rises Fourfold
Since Israel State Born
JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Jew-
ish population of Israel has in-
creased almost four times since
the state was established 20 years
ago but the Arab population has
also .increaSed and now stands at
14 per cent of the Jewish popula-
tion compared to 11 per cent in
1948; the central bureau of statis-
tics :disclosed: The Arab figures
include EaSt 'Jerusalem.
The figures, taken from the stat-
istical annual for 1967 to be pub-'
lished shortly, showed that the
Jewish population of Israel increas-
ed at an average annual rate of
6.9 per cent since 1948. The Jewish
population then stood at 649,600; at
the end of last year, it was
2,383,600.
Immigration accounted for 1,-
100,000 'and natural increase for
635,000. Mass immigration was re-
sponsible for an annual population
increase of 24 per cent during the
peak years of immigration, 1949-
1951. In the last two years, how-
ever, immigration accounted for
only 2 per cent of the annual in-
crease.

NEW YORK—Some 200 Sabbath
observing Jews in New York City
were placed in jobs during 1967,
the first full year of a new pro-
gram organized by the New York
Federation Employment and Guid-
ance Service for such Jewish job-
seekers. An FEGS spokesman said
the FEGS places most of the Sab-
bath observing Jews who register
with the agency who are placeable.
The FEGS program relies en-
tirely on persuasion, in contrast to
the techniques of the National Jew-
ish Commission on Law and Pub-
lic Affairs (COLPA), which uses
legal pressures on behalf of Sab-
bath observers denied jobs be-
cause of their special religious
commitments, which require them
to leave work early on Fridays,
particularly in the winter, and to
abstain from work on Saturday.
Initially, the project began with
a part-time staff worker in Jan-
uary 1966. In September 1967,
Rabbi Joel Skurnick was named to
the post on a full-time basis. The
spokesman said that, on the aver-
age, 15 to 20 Sabbath-observing
Jews are helped to get placements
each week. Jobs have been devel-
oped with the New York Telephone
Company First National City
Bank, IBM, Chemical New York
Trust Company and similar firms.

ples of equal rights of all states

ternal affairs."
In London, Dr. Nahum Galdmann
sent a message of congratulations
to President Nicolae Ceausescu of
Romania Tuesday on the occasion
of the 24th anniversary of that
country's liberation from Nazi con-
trol.
The message, sent on behalf of
the World Jewish Congress, which
Dr. Goldmann heads, expressed ap-
preciation for the equality and
freedom of religion accorded its
Jewish citizens by Romania. "In
common with all lovers of peace
and freedom throughout the world,
we express the confident hope that
under your wise leadership Ro-
mania will continue to enjoy undis-
turbed independence, freedom and
peace," Dr. Goldmann said.
Supertanker - to Carry Oil
Sought by Zim Lines
HAIFA (JTA)—The Ziff Lines,
Israel's largest shipping company,
announced that it will either build
or purchase a 250,000-deadweight-
ton supertanker now that Israel
has made a firm decision to con-
struct a 42-inch oil pipeline from
Eilat on the Gulf of Aqaba to Ash-
dod on the Mediterranean Sea.
According to'- the company's di•
rectors, Zim had been reluctant
to commit itself to so large a ves-
sel without assurances that it would
be fully employed. • Other Israeli
shipping companies have report-
edly ordered the giant tankers to
carry oil to Eilat and bypass the
Suez Canal.
